Try to launch trains, get to launcher window, press start CRASH. what the. Even CM crashes. Have back ups on CDP. Do I have to re-install and go thru all that download of update nonsense again. ARGHHHHHH.

This sounds like a database crash or corruption and can usually be repaired without reinstalling Trainz.

Browsing the internet should not kill Trainz unless you are doing something that is very graphics intensive, which could eat up your graphics and system memory, causing Trainz to crash. I rarely access anything outside of Trainz while I am in the program because of this, although having adequate system and video memory (not disk space, but RAM) does help mitigate this. Another thing I suggest you do is run Trainz with the developer options for showing the command line interface. This will enable the cmd prompts which will run at the same time as Trainz. As you update things in the program, they will kick in and show what's going on. If you have two monitors, you can run them on the second monitor and see what's going on underneath the hood. Now anyway, the main point of wanting these to run here is so you can tell when to shutdown your computer after using Trainz. When these windows have closed, once the program has stopped, it is safe to turn your computer off.

Now more importantly, so you don't have to reinstall Trainz after a crash, is how to run database repairs. Start CM (Content Manager) and choose Quick Database Repair... or Extended Database Repair... Don't be fooled by the names because both take a long time to run.

In the event that Trainz or Content Manager will not start, you can run a database repair from a command line.

Start a command prompt with administrator access rights --- Click on Start then All Programs, and Accessories. Right mouse-button click on Command Prompt and choose Run as Adminstrator.
Confirm that you are doing this if you have that enabled.

Navigate to the folder where Trainz is installed and then to the Bin folder. Mine happens to be in:

D:\Auran\TS12\Bin, so I typed D: , press enter, then cd D:\Auran\TS12\Bin and pressed enter.

Yours maybe in C:\Program Files (x86)\Auran\TS12\Bin. For this you need to type in double quotes around the path like this cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Auran\TS12\Bin" and press enter.

At the command prompt type:

TrainzUtil repairdatabase and press enter.

Let the program run. It will run and do its thing for some time, so DO NOT do anything else with your computer during this time.

When the process has completed, try running Content Manager. You may have to repair some content, or view errors to clear the warnings and errors should there be false errors reported.

Thanks for that, did all of your stuff, and still no go, Get the launcher window, go start, crash get a tiny window with numbers in it, and some text sometimes I can read jet, so the jetlog may throw some light on it???
In my content I have some 104 with missing dependicies, some with zzzz on them, Nothing showing faulty. My route is about 12mb big and I have been at this current route for 6 months. Have lots of backupups.
I have a sneeking feeling and this as happened on previous route builds that after a certain size the trainz program just fails. Maybe I am being too ambitious with my routes.

I think my fix for that problem was to do a Windows System Restore to the last time the game worked. You'd be surprised how often SR fixes stuff.

Sean,

More questions.

Do you see a tiny menu instead of full screen?

Have you changed video drivers or updated your screen resolution?

Oh, what you did doesn't hurt by the way, and it's good to know how to do this stuff anyway. I find that after a DR, Trainz loads a bit faster since the process rebuilds the database file assets.tdx.

Full screen was unticked dont know why, with some very low resolution picked also have no idea why that happened. which is not supported by my graphics card, hence causing the game to crash. hopefully fixed now so will give it a go.
Thanks for your help.

Sean, click here and save the application to your desktop. Launch the program as an administrator. Go to 'Utilities' and select 'Get System Information'. Scroll down to the bottom and tell me what it says for "Detected DirectX version", if anything.

In addition to that, the information given under 'Graphics Card Information' may help as well. (I should know, it's one of my utilities).

Sorry for delay in reply, everything seems back to normal. Phew!!!!! one question is ther any way i can access tutorials to repair content and fix stuff with missing dependencies, i know cm will find some. all my content is of european stock, some shows red in menu and will not place on route.

Check out shaneturner12's blog for some basic repair tips. Pev used to host some very useful tools on his site, and he's working on getting them back up in a more secure location. When that happens, he will probably announce it on the forum (probably under Freeware Announcements). Stay tuned.
