Oddest locomotive Ever...

That is one interesting looking loco. I couldn't help noticing that gondola four cars back, looks like that thing has seen some use, its got an awful bad "swayback" to it.

EDIT: That thing looks like a massive GE 44 tonner, combined with a pair of EMD SW loco....

If you measure between the wheel flanges, probably about 4". You might have trouble measuring between the inside surfaces of the rail head.

Technically the gauge is the width of the rail, because to get to the inside edge, you would have to cross over the rail, and then to measure to the other inside edge, you would have to cross back over the rail, sort of like a diamond crossing shape, but in a straight line.

It is an electro locomotive, it is one of the first rotary cyrrent locomotives ever, and for a locomotive from the early 1930'ies it is way ahead of its time - it just looks odd. The "boiler" is actually shrouding for the converter. Remember the days before the microchip? The locomotive is driven like a steamer however, hence the single cab.

The Swiss federal railways converted a C 3/3 steamer from coal to electric heating during WWII, but it is nowhere near the same thing.
ÖBB 1089.3 was intended as all electric from the beginning.
 
If you like strange thing done to F units how about what ATSF did to them with there Conversion to CF7 units, there is a few different types with both GP type cabs and round roof type cabs as well. Check out DLS for ATSF, Amtrack, under and other versions

F-unit CF conversions were already mentioned...back in 2008, when the thread went silent.
 
I am a full supporter of bumping old threads ... Oftentimes when I don't want to start a brand new thread, I search and search the forum to find a relevant thread ...even if it is 5 y/o
