Obsessive Compulsive

Are we Obsessive Complusive ?
Hoarding hundereds of thousands of assets, ones that we may never, ever use in our lifetime ?
Asking for a precisely exact, make and model, of one particular numbered loco, or car ?
Asking for an exact 1/3 arc DEM, encompassing an absolutely rediculously huge chunk of the earths globe (a route that we may never hope to complete in an entire lifetime) ?
Asking for a replication of one particular triangular, abandoned, delapidated, hulk of a now burnt out building in North Phila (which is in an actual urban wastland dump, of inner city decay).

The fun of Trainz is supposed to be the simplistic joy of creating a realistic, enjoyable RR scene (Mezzoprezzo, Iseegrins, Kree8tiviT, and many others, do this very, very well) ! ... not all the painful hard work, not a full time job, that overwhelms and controls, and consumes your long lost life of leasure.

I, myself, am Obsessive Compulsive ...

But I am trying to break the habit ... and lighten up, and enjoy Trainz surveyor more, so it is fun ... not a unpleasent controlling job.

Don't think too much about it....I just have fun with trainz, do what I feel like, play like a little boy or drive the trains like a responsible adult, delete the red stuff I cannot repair even after trying 10 times, and one of these days I am going to pluck up enough courage and try to create something, and learn how to repair assets with pev's tools. As soon as I want to begin creating something, my trainz call me away....

Same here I have downloaded so many things that I could never even come close to using them:)
It's just to easy to get new assets.
I spend more time reading the forums and downloading than playing trainz.

I wouldn't say that myself, although I do trawl for assets regularly, and I do visit the forums for tips, tricks and solutions. And ideas. I'm frequently amazed at the stuff I have learned, all through the efforts of others. But I do play Trainz, a lot. To me, Trainz is the model railway I always wanted, and I can make it as big or as small as I want, without space constraints, and once I have an asset I can use it as many times as I want without having to buy a new one each time. I spend a lot of time in surveyor, tweaking and improving my route, and then driving through it, and it is fun. I don't get hung up on the detail of building a prototype route, accurate to the nth degree and totally authentic in all respects, although some do and enjoy doing that.

That to me is the whole point of Trainz. It is whatever you want it to be, and the only reason to play it is to enjoy it your own way. And it is so versatile that there is always some new twist to interest you.

Trainz is a game, an entertainment and a relaxation therapy, and quite possibly the best leisure investment I've ever made.

Happy Trainzing to one and all, and keep on doing it your way.

Ken,

You got this spot on. With Trainz we can make things as complicated or as simple as we like. I too see this as the model railway I only have dreamt of. The fact that we can download a slice of the earth and rebuild long abandoned routes, or even put in routes that never existed, is what's so great about this hobby.

In the past I was a big trawler, but more recently I've become very picky about my downloads, and only download what I plan on using. As I see assets, I think about their usefulness now rather than wholesale selecting of stuff. Over the past few weeks, I have done some Trainz housekeeping and have deleted a bunch of old stuff that hasn't been used since I first got TRS2004 in December 2004.

I agree this is one of the best returns on an investment I've ever made with the constant and consistent reusability of this game. Who would have thought we'd still be using the same/updated program for over 10 years in some cases.

I just grab what is needed by routes, and rolling stock, and locomotives. Edit the bugs out, delete the unused excess.

I like to think of Trainz as a modeling medium. Lot's of bench-top modelers don't think what we do is real modeling, but I would challenge them to build even a small layout with all the animation that we can pack into the same route - and do it in much less time and with a lot more beer money left over . . . .
As a reforming obsessive compulsive, I must admit I do like getting the operational details as close to the real thing as possible. If only AI trains had more “I” . . .

I've only been a Trainz builder since spring 2012 but I have managed to completely build a 28 mile extension Eastward from Hawes on the Settle/Carlisle line and also enlarged The Robe River Iron Routes with many assets and 2 new entry portals for traffic.

Although I am sometimes bewildered by the terminology of the guys who talk of cdf's and pdf's, not to mention scripts etc etc, I can only admire their dedication to finding out how Trainz actually works. Personally I don't want to know how it works, I find that I can press a button and things happen and that is where I have found my enjoyment and as Ken states, it is possible the best leisure purchase I have made for many many years.

Building the landscapes and the infrastructure is more enjoyable for me than playing the trains and Yes, I have become a little obsessive with the ideas that confront me but that is what I like but it is good to see that everybody has different priorities with their hobby.
both
I have spent years with 00 gauge model railways but have succeeded more here with Trainz than I could ever have achieved with tracks and baseboards.

I would like to say that the Forum is the "Font of Knowledge" for Trainz and I read it regularly and get many ideas and tips from it - thanks guys for all your assistance.

Tony
