Oahu Railway & Land Co.

So for about the last week I have started work on the OR&L route that I have been thinking about doing for sometime now. I am working currently on the North Shore section of the route first from Kahuku up to the Waimea Bay horse shoe curve, adding some detail here and there. Here are a few shots of what I have worked on so far.

All of the terrain is being free handed since there isnt a DEM map file for Oahu which makes creating this route a challenge but is still doable. Please let me know what you guys think so far.

Not enough palm trees, for one :hehe:

If you use/download the free Google Earth program, you can use it to help build landforms and track alignments and such. I've had a lot of luck using GE for prototypical routes I make.

Also, you can use Google Earth to look at the current state of old roadbeds/etc. For example the tracks of the OR&L, as they stand currently, exist nearly to Nanakuli on the western side of the Island.

I work for the Hawaiian Railway, so Im using our track map as well as google earth, as well as many charts stored in our vault :P. Beleave it or not most of the trees on Oahu arnt palm trees, but mainly mesquite trees, Different types of Oaks, Pine's and other Hard wood's of the sort.

Maybe try using TransDEM to model the island...

I would but since I work full time with the Hawaiian Railway I really dont have the time (Or patience honestly) to create one. I have tryed in the past but ended up screwing up Trainz all together and had to completely re-install the game, in other words, its way to complicated for my already stressed brain :/

This is a photo of one of the two maps I am using for track, road and station placement, I have this and a copy of a 1938 island map on lone to me for this part of the project. I am looking for others interested in helping with this route any way they can. A good friend is helping with Engines and cars when and where he can so that is a start because I really really would like to release this route to the world to enjoy and would like it to be the best route I can provide to everyone to enjoy. i have access to just about everything related to the OR&L, the Army/Navy railroads, building photos and things on the plantation operations as well and would really appreciate any help creating the route from those that would be interested.

I went out to the USGS map viewer site and there is NED data available so a TransDEM map is possible but not so sure about the raster maps.

I have all 16 of the topo maps covering the whole island, as well as the Transdem file ... but I never got around to georeferencing all of the maps.

If someone with Transdem wants them, PM me

If anyone could convert it to a DEM map that can be loaded into trainz that would be the most helpful part of building the route. Also, If someone were to create a DEM map of Oahu for trainz, would there be any way to lay my track map down on the DEM map file as a texture file?

I am looking into creating a DEM, not so sure we can put what you have already done on it though. Also I assume you are using TS2009 for this venture.

Ken, Yes I am using 09 for this and wouldnt have a problem starting over as I havent really done much anyway. And what I ment was would there be a way to take this track map I have and lay it out as a texture on the DEM file ?

No ... If a DEM is made in the future ... all your hand made (flat baseboard route) work will be in vain ... and will have to be redone from scratch on the DEM.

Severe family problems are starting up again (reoccuring) at home, my hard drive disc space is criticatly filling up, and I have no time to master Transdem at present.

I dont think im wording my post correctly.....

If and when a dem file is made, would i be able to do this....but with the black and white track map I have instead.

(Photo of a route a friend is working on.)

Would have to ask geophil if it is possible to use your map, I do not know of anyway to make that happen. I am having trouble getting raster maps which would give you similar results but not as good.

If you have a way to know where in the world the map represent in terms of LAT and LON, there should be not so complicated way to get your map, any maps, into TransDEM and your route like planes to trace what ever you need.

If there are no LAT and LON info, it still can be made, but is much more work as you need to overlay it to a known map with LAT & LON and find areas that overlap and so on, can be done but not so precisely and may be hours spent for very little gain.. (speaking form experience using old maps..)

Ken/Shortline, If there isnt a way to get that map into the Dem file then I can eye ball it pretty easy I think. I live On Oahu as well so I can always go out on the old ROW as well as use google earth to plot out the ROW when the DEM map when it becomes available.

This looks like a very good start and since you have a lot of experience with the actual locale, I can't imagine anyone else doing a better job.
