Nvidia Aliasing

Hi guys.

I've finished upgrading my system which now has an Nvidia 9800 GTX+ 512MB card. The card works without fault except one when applied to trainz and that is AA.

Even if i set the card for 16XQ AA, i still have aliasing from approx 50FT from the cab (when viewed from inside), and at the furthest point away from the cab the display goes into a sort of soupy effect. My previous ATI card did not exibit such bad aliasing at 4X AA, and certainly no difference in view distance. All settings are at MAX in Trainz options.

I recall the same problem when i had an FX5600 when they first came out, and after that i stayed with ATI.

Is there a 3rd party software utility available that will allow me to change the LOD distance of the card. I'm assuming it's an optimisation thing within the drivers that cause the aliasing problem and not the game.

What driver version are you using??? OEM drivers that came on the cd with the card where abit flakey!!!! (175.16)
Try downloading the latest drivers for the 9800 series cards... I have a 9800GX2 card and have recently installed 178.24 without any problems...
I don't know whether it's my imagination or what, but there does seem to be a slight improvement... (previously using 177.92)
You can download the latest Nvidia drivers from; http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Cheers, Mac...

Try RivaTuner >http://downloads.guru3d.com/<

Backup your install or make sure that you set a restore point .. Install the app ... use the DX settings to force AA 2X2 and check the result , if all is well ( and it should be ) try AA 4X4 . I had a similar problem with ground textures using nV and this was the fix that worked for me regardless of driver revision.

:)

I had a go with rivatuner but i had to set it at 4x4 which gave quite a performance hit. Eventually i've settled for 8xQ but it's still not as good as i'd like, or expected a card like the 9800 to perform like.

Thanks for the tip though

I found with my card 7900GS selecting the trainz profile will not apply AA or AF,I have to manually go in and force AF at x16 and AA at 8x and maybe enable supersampling. No problems with draw distance FPS ect.

Hi Guys, what exactly is aliasing and what are the normal setting on most cards? I have a EVGA 8800 GT/512. I'm not sure what I should be looking for when I run TRS2006. My frame rates are great, lowest I've seen is 30 in a densly sceniced area.

Hi. Aliasing is where lines etc..rails, tops of fences, sides of building/structures etc.. appear as steps and are not smooth. Depending on your cards performance depends on how much Anti-Aliasing you need to apply to minimise it. Typically for your card i would think you would use 4X or even 8X AA, but of course each cards performance (& driver), will give different results.

Hope this helps

Regards Barry

Thankz Barry, I'll check out my card tonight when I get home from work. I have noticed these effects on some fences but just ignored them.
