Noob Question

I am trying to understand how driver rules work by editing an existing session. My first problem is I cannot figure out how to identify the consist that I am looking at. Given an arbitrary consist, how do I determine what its name is for use in various rules (e.g. couple, load, etc.)? The documentation seems sorely lacking in that area. Thanks.

In Surveyor, click on the 'Trains' tab and then the ? (or press F7 then press P). Now click on any traincar and the popup will id the car name and number to use in commands like couple or decouple.

When setting up a series of driver commands in a session I like to name the lead loco with the same name as the driver, eg Class 47 Alastair. I find this makes assigning the commands to each consist easier and also makes searching for a consist in a big layout easier as well. Hope this helps

Cheers
Russell.

Thanks. That was what I was looking for. The couple command worked fine. However, the load command seems like it needs more like what/where to load. How does one program it to load at a coal tipple? Does the industry have to be specially configured for that or is it automagic?

The industry has to be interactive. In Surveyor they will have the green letters ind and a check mark or LARS icon to show they are interactive.

Thanks for the reply. It is not clear what I am looking for but there are bi-directional red arrows on the track under the loader building (there are also lots of rotating dashed circles on the tracks that don't seem to do anything). When I click on it with the '?' I get a coal icon. There are things inside to click such as loading 1 car at a time, various rates (presumably of coal), how much to load per interval etc. Since I don't know what to set them to or even what the units are (tons?) I guessed. However, I there still must be some magical setting that makes it work. When the train drives through the loader, it stops for each hopper as expected but nothing else happens. At least it would appear I am getting the script right just not the interactive industry.

You don't quote the kuid number of the track section with the red arrows but they are probably the LARS IndustrialRail (kuid2:69871:10001:3). If so, here is a link to a tutorial of how to set them up. http://rapidshare.com/files/97388922/PortOgden_1_Documentation.zip

The rotating segmented circles identify the location of a spline. Spline points are places that you can click and drag to move part of the object. In a track it is a point where you can attach another track.

Product units in Trainz are:
Container types (containers, general goods, logs, lumber stacks) are Kg/unit.
Bulk (coal, woodchips, etc) & Liquids are in kilograms/litre.

You are correct. It is ProtoLARS. I found some stuff on it but it was not very useful. I'll download your suggestion. Thanks.

P.S. How do you guys find this stuff?

OK, I think I see what is going on. Not only do I need the interactive industry but I also need interactive consists and what I'm using are just some coal hoppers I found. That brings me to the next question.

How do I find the ProtoLARS interactive vehicles? There are a gazillion vehicles but there does not seem to be a way to sort them other then alphabetically. I think I recall reading something in Surveyor about favorites. Is that where I can set up a few specific vehicles so only they show up in Surveyor? How do I search the list for the ProtoLARS vehicles and set them up as "favorites?" TIA.

In Surveyor, on the Trains tab, all wagons that have the green tick or the lars tick in the viewer window are industry enabled/interactive, these are compatible with the ProtoLARS and M.I.N (Multiple Industry New) industry tracks.

OK, I found the LARS vehicles but I had to look at each one individually (there needs to be an easier way). I think I am beginning to understand how some of this works a little but now I have a dilemma. It appears the start delay for the load track is a minimum of 1 minute (I see no way to make it less as it will not accept 0 nor is there a way to change the units to seconds). According to the tutorial that is the time the train has to be stationary before it will load. However, the AI will not pause that long and I don't see anyway to set the load delay time. What do I do at this point? TIA.

You could try the "wait for xx minutes" command. The Trainz pro routes site/forums may have more info and or vehicles suitable for your needs.

There are two types of interactive systems in Trainz.

Trainz animated industries and scenery objects are set up to load one car at a time at the load point. For some of them you have to stop the train at the load point and wait while it loads. For others you can pull the train through at about 4 mph and each car will load as it comes under the load point. In either case only one car at a time is serviced and you have to wait for it to complete. The Auran industries are enhanced and expanded by TrainzProRoutes LARS Basic Industry (BI) and BI2 systems, available from
http://www.trainzproroutes.org/forum/)

ProtoLARS is a prototypical industry activity system in which your train sets out a cut of cars (loaded or empty) at one industry and goes on to service other industries in a similar manor. At a later time, you or a different train will come by and pickup the cars after ProtoLARS has performed its programed operation. Hence you can set out a couple of carloads of general goods at a warehouse and come back later to pick up the empties or set out a couple of box cars at an elevator and pick them up later after they are loaded. It's not intended for you to set and wait for the activity to complete so you don't need short time settings.

That is sort of what I was doing. As a learning experience I took Greenbriar Turn and planned to set up a session where I could shuttle empties to various coal tipples, pick up loads and have the empties filled while I continue to other tipples. Then bring loads back to a yard and set up consists to be taken away (maybe through a portal but that is too advanced for me at this time).

Anyway, my first test is to have a set of empties at a tipple and program the AI to couple to the empties (that works), then move to the load point (that works) and have the industry load them. I chose to set the option to load one hopper at a time. Everything seems to work as expected, except the AI pauses the hoppers at the load point for only a few seconds (I see no way to change that) which is not sufficient for the industry setting. Putting a pause before or after the load command in the script just pauses then proceeds as previously discribed.
