NJT Stations to be abandoned?

SUBWAY125

F40PH Lover!
As most northeast USA railfans have heard, NJT is activating the Lackawanna Cut-off from Hoboken to Scranton, PA. By the end of 2011 or early 2012, service will start going to Andover, then later in 2012/2013, service to Scranton-Hoboken runs will start.

HOWEVER, possibly when Andover opens, these stations will shut down:
Netcong
Mount Olive
Hackettstown

If these stations don't close when Andover opens, then most likely when Scranton opens, then Netcong, Mount Olive, and Hackettstown will shut down.

Here is the map of the Cut-off:

I don't know any confirmations on the abandonments, but just alerting everyone who wants to railfan at those three stations.

That would make sense if the stations are redundant, although I'm glad the Cut-off is being opened soon. I've been following this for quite some time.

Another question, is NJT going to do anything with the tracks through Elizabeth? These are the ones that run under the NEC and out towards Phillipsburg and Easton?

Netcong, Mount Olive, and Hackettstown all have low ridership after 9/11 and the Montclair Connection. Also, I don't think NJT has any plans for the tracks at Elizabeth.

Where are u getting your information Subway125...I live in Hackettstown and if they were gonna "Shut down" Hackettstown, Netcong, and Mount Olive why would they bother upgrading the line out this way...upkeep of staions, Ticket Machines, and upgrading the trackage...Transit isnt that dumb...Plus that would be a stupid move on their part since Andover is quite a Drive from any of those stations...Transit wants to Expand Service not take service away... Plus i had a talk with a Signal Maintainer while taking a walk...and i asked how the ridership of this line was and he told me it was UP in the last few years...aka why they were making improvements on the line.

Cheers,
Brian

The Line thru Hackettstown is what is called the old road. NJ Transit has no plans to discontinue service on this route they may someday go further west.

The Old Road used to connect back up with the cut-off at Slateford Jct it went thru some very off the beaten path places like Washington, NJ, Oxford Furnace, Manunka Chunk which had a jct with the Pennsylvania Railroad's Bel-Del Branch to Trenton, NJ PRR ran passenger trains thru to Stroudsburg.
The old road then went thru Delaware, NJ than Portland, PA and than Slateford Jct. The tunnels at Manunka Chunk were an operational headache up until the line was abandoned west of Washington, NJ.

Well according to what I said:
---possibly when Andover opens---

---most likely when Scranton opens---

---I don't know any confirmations on the abandonments---

I didn't say "These stations will be closed for good". I'm just making a prediction. btw, on my Boonton Line I'm already at Little Falls!:)

It's possible the today Montclair-Boonton/Morristown Lines could be rerouted thru those areas, but the tracks at Washington are on an embankment, thus making a stop difficult to make. But its possible, but I have a feeling someone will protest against it :P.

Washington NJ had a station at one time it was in use until 1966 it was a multi-floored building and you had to walk up steps to get to the platform.
