Are there any tutorials or tips for putting scenery in?

I'm looking for the following
  • Howto make a forest look real
  • Howto make cars run on the road and through the crossings.
  • Howto make lakes and streams look realistic
  • Howto make bridges
  • Howto make tunnels

RJ13,

Welcome aboard ---
I would suggest , ( as this is your first post ) , that you learn to use the "search" Tab at the the top of the Forum . I must admit it is not an ideal solution , but being new to the Forum , it could possibly result in quicker results regarding your queries , read all the FAQ threads , and then post for info --

A LOT of work goes into Placing Individual Trees, as Well as the Easier Method of Tree Splines.

The Cars however should Already run on a Road You've Placed. ;)

If I get cars to run on a road then I cross that road over the rails and place crossing boom there, how do I get the boom to lower when the train approaches?

When I make a lake it appears that the water is very brown. Is there a way to change the waters colour?

I have seen some stuff on tunnels and bridges but most of that relates to earlier versions of Trainz. Is there much difference between the earlier versions and 2009?

Splines are not the way to go. They're too repetitive. There's no easy way to pretty forests. Look for JVC or user Jankvis on the DLS, the trees that come built into Trainz is mostly crap, imo.

You'll need to set a region for the route you're working on before the Carz will appear. This can either be done through the route's config file or under Route Options.

Use a riverbed texture beside the water. Or a beach texture where there's supposed to be a beach. As appropriate.

Look for username bendorsey on the DLS. He's got some nice bridges.

Use tunnels from here. They work on the dighole principle and are much more flexible as compared to the built-ins.

Water colour can be defined under Environmental Options in the last tab when in surveyor.

Found out how to make crossings work

Thanks for those tips.

I just found out why my road did not work. I was using the scripted road under tracks. I loaded another scenario and found out that normal road (with cars) are listed under objects in the splines, they are not under tracks. Click on the house and when the tab opens out click on the large spline circle next to the large house circle.

Here is a good tip. Load up a working scenario and use the get tool from different sections to find out what is placed where. If you don't have the right tab open then the get tool won't be able to find the thing you are touching, so change tabs.

Edit

I found out how to add a crossing that works.

First you need to realise that the crossing is both road and railway track. So you can't have your rail or road go over the crossing. The rail and road needs to join up to the crossing. Also you need to pick the right crossing piece. Most have four yellow marker circles for where you link up the rail and road, but I found some have 2 yellow marker up arrows when placed as well. The one without the up arrows did not work (it also derailed my train) but the one with the up arrows did. Crossings are automatic, once they are connect to a road spline and railway spline they sense when the train is coming and lower the gates. The cars will move from the road spline across the crossing automatically if the gates are up. When the train has moved far enough away the boom gates will raise.

If this was a picture of the railway crossing
Code:
  "
  "
=====
  "
  "

Where the " is the road and = is the railway
You need to cut the road and railway and place the crossing in the centre

Code:
  "
  "
==C==
  "
  "

Then join the railway and road to the crossing, moving the end marker circles to the four circles on the crossing.

If you're after roads look for content on the DLS by username bnsf50. You should be blown away.

Nicholas.
