Hi there mate,

I just want to say welcome. :) If you run the Driver "Sessions" that come with the game it should give you a discription of what to do to complete the session.

Hopefully :)

You can also create your own sessions to run on routes, but you have to do that from inside surveyor. Then you can make up your own rules.

Regards

how do you know what stations to stop at and what time
This varies considerably. In a TRS2004 scenario for a passenger service you usually get a timetable at the start, and a warning message as you approach each station. TRS2006 and TC driver sessions can also do that but it's rare. It's up to the creator of each activity to design it how they wish.
how do you know when your next station is coming up
You can switch into map mode and have a look but the real answer is that you need to become familiar with a route over time.
is there a guard whistle
In scenarios yes usually.
bit confused what im supposed to do
Fear not, it is all a bit overpowering at first. Read the early chapters of the manual, work through the first few tutorial driver sessions, then explore in more depth whatever aspect of Trainz appeals to you.

The Trainz wikibook might help a bit, especially the "Things You Can Do" section.
