New Train Related Software?

...huh?

:cool: You can play clip-art trains and such, but with the amount of content available and all the improvements made, the only train simulator better than N3V Trainz is a camera mounted on the nose of a locomotive.

The Department of Transportation, even the simulator in Norfolk Southern's Exhibit Car can't even touch TS12.

I miss Transport Tycoon, this was a great game with more than just trains, I would love to see a remake of this, but improved graphics to match todays computers.

As for rail games at the minute, I'll stick with Trainz.

Google for 'open transport tycoon', you still need the original (well, TTD) for some graphics though. The graphics can be slightly better than the original with the addition of updated 32bpp graphics packs.

But MSTS, while old, has some better routes than trainz (Chicagoland, PRR Eastern Region, Feather River Route, LAUPT, Surfline, etc....). It also has some better train models (El Capitan, 1940 & 1955 Daylights, Super Chief, Chief, Baldwin Centipedes, Broadway Limited, General, Liberty Limited, NCL, Empire Builder, 1938 & 1940 & 1940 20th Century Limiteds, ESE, Troop trains, Sunset Limited, Pheobe Snow, Surfliner, Streamlines models, etc....).

MSTS never made the abandonware category, but transport tycoon and railroad tycoon 1 & 2 did.

Free legal downloads now.

As for MSTS, follow RRSignal's link to get the patch and the content updates if you buy a version that don't already have the newer content. Be advised for MSTS BIN to work even if the version you buy is already updated to 1.4 you'll need to install the official microsoft patch since that's the version BIN scans for. As for Open Rails, I'm on the development team and what I can tell you is;

1. We're kicking around ideas for new editors to get completely independent from MSTS, Trainz surveyor has been examined and discussed.

2. It works pretty good right now, but it's a long long way from ready to actually be a viable alternative to MSTS.

3. Otto Wipfel is working on a stand-alone Open Rails mini route that won't require ownership of MSTS - I'm currently trying to download the blasted thing to test it, but it's 600 megs and Otto has a thing about WinRar so I keep getting a partial file. :'(
