New to Trainz and having lots of problems...

Hello all,

I recently bought the 2010 Engineer's Edition for my eight year old, he is much more adept at this than I am, and we are having all kinds of trouble with this from it not working because my drivers are out of date, though his computer is less than three months old, trouble with it freezing and blacking out the screen, and unfamiliarity with dowloading locos at the download station, but then not having them show up in the yard or not working becuase of some problem, which is usually the norm. I really want to believe in this product, but with all of these issues we are currently having, we are not getting much use out of it. Is the a Trainz for Dummies book or somewhere someone could direct me to set me straight. Heck, I even went to the help area, but was unable fully access this (the content that looks like Wikipedia). Any help or suggestions would sincerely be appreciated.

Laptop or desktop? Heck, just run the trainz diag in the 2010 folder and post the results here. Let's get it working first, then we will tackle the content.

We have two desktops...

If you mean the diagonostics that run before you actually start running the program with the green checkmarks, they both check out. I even went as far as to update the ATI drivers on both.

Since you have TS2010 then you should be able to download directly from TS2010.

Do a search and when a DS whatever shows drag it over to the download tab, press the start button and it should magically appear.

Some content was made for earlier versions of Trainz when the error checking wasn't as good as it is today. It is possible to correct errors and there is a ongoing project to update and correct errors on the DLS so over time these should diminish.

What exactly is your son interested in? Maybe some one con point him at some content that is error free to get him started.

Also watch out for the favourite content tag, surveyor, menu, options, surveyor settings, the very bottom item is "only display favorite items" make sure this is unchecked.

My guess is that when you download anything you aren't downloading the dependencies with it. Example: You download a loco but you don't have the bogeys or horn. You should also try 3rd party sites such as Jointed Rail, they have a lot of good free stuff. Finally since you have TS2010 you should try to turn on compatibility mode to allow older content to run properly. That last piece of advice will probably be the most useful.

You also need to turn down your video quality settings to less than 2500m draw distance and at least 0.4 good weather fog.
