New to 22 … a quick question about saving route and sessions

Hi folks.. I’ve been a Trainz user since TS2004 was released and used the game off and on for 20 years!
This forum has never let me down so a quick query…..
Having finally taken the plunge and upgraded to TS22 with a standard subscription I am a little confused over the options for saving my progress.
I am currently trying to build a new route. Can you guys suggest the best protocol to save my route in surveyor 2 whereby it keeps the route but doesn’t change the session?
I seem to get various options and because of the big change from TS2004 I’m unfamiliar at this point!

I have to say, whilst it’s a steep learning curve, I am loving what I am seeing with the new graphics and surveyor tools….

From that description you probably have Trainz Plus which will always report as being "Trainz Railroad Simulator 2022" on its Windows Bar Title and the word "subscription" confirms it - the separate program TRS22PE (which also has Surveyor 2) is not a subscription offering.

When you create a new route a new session will always be created alongside it. If you load a route without also loading a session (the two are separate files) then another new session will also be created. This is because certain things (e.g. products carried in rolling stock or waiting to be loaded at an industry, amongst other things) will always be saved in the session, not the route.

The very first time you save a newly created route (using the Save or Save As commands) the session will always be saved with it. The session will be named, very imaginatively, "Default". You have no choice over this.

When you later reload the route you can load it without also loading the session and then you can choose not to save the session that will be automatically created.

The Trainz Wiki has a number of pages that you would probably find useful:-

Route and Session Basics which covers the topic you have raised in your post, and
Using the S20 Tools which covers the new Surveyor 2.0 interface.

The way I work is to create a new route, this will add a new session as default. Work on your creation and when done, save the route and session before going to driver mode. Make sure all trains are placed in the session layer. When in driver mode and you want to exit, don't save the overwrite session. Either don't save the session or save it as a new name.
When you open your creation, select the route and also the session. Work on the creation and as before save first.

Thank you guys! Most helpful. And, yes I should have said it is Trainz Plus.
Still getting used to the new terms.

OK, when you hit "CTRL s" a widow comes up giving you the option to "Save new route and session" or "Overwrite existing route and" "Do not save session". You can click on this, and it will only save the route. I use this all the time when I am driving a session and see something wrong on the route and fix it.

Yes, that is when you are using the UDS to switch between Driver and Surveyor. I do the same - switch from Driver to Surveyor, fix a problem, save the route only, then switch back into Driver to continue the session. It is a great innovation.

Thanks for that, I just did a cruise of my route modifying/editing as I go, never knew this method! Always wary of messing up the session.

Always wary of messing up the session.
With good reason as the position of all consists are now saved in the session even if they (the consists) are in the route. By default all consists should be in the session anyway, which is the method always I use.

The UDS, with its session and route saving rules, is explained on the Trainz Wiki at How_to_Use_the_UDS_Interface
