New SSD

Just put a SSD in, crucial 240gb M4. This is versus a velociraptor @ 10000 rpm.
Load time from clicking launcher to saved driver session showing 60 secs, no different. I started the SSD trainz twice to check.
FPS no difference, I have a consist stopped waiting for helpers.
I'm running 2 sessions, one on the SSD and the other on the raptor to get comparisons.
What if anything have I done wrong, I will say going from consist to consist scenery etc seems to load faster.

The crucial m4 is a SATA III 6GB SSD. Do you have it connected with a SATA III cable. On many mobos a couple of the SATA ports are optimised for SSD's. Have you checked the mobo manual to make sure it is connected to the correct port? Have you enabled AHCI mode in the BIOS? Did you check Crucial to make sure you have the latest firmware?

Mines a sata 2 mobo so will only get up to 3gb p/s. ( future proofing for a sata 3 board).
I've got 8 SATA ports 2 of which are JMICRON363 (directly on mobo), 6 in a cluster on edge of mobo ICH10R.
Not done ACHI in BOIS. (it has an integrated ACHI controller)
It's an old mobo (MSI P45 Platinum) so maybe I'm not likely to see an improvement until I upgrade.

Are you actually using AHCI drivers though as Windoze may have installed IDE ones as happened to me, had to hack the registry to get it to pick up the AHCI and install the correct drivers.

You could try using a different port. Some controllers work better with SSDs then others.

I had a problem with my first SSD running slow, switching from a marvel port to an intel port fixed it.

There's the problem then ; you have a bottleneck. If you have a SATA II mobo you can never get any more than SATA II performance.

Edit* I just looked at a review for the MSI P45 Platinum and it also only supports PCI-E 1.0 The latest mobo's are on PCI-E 3.0

Thanks Lewisner,
I knew I wouldn't get SATA III performance but was hoping SATA II and an SSD would improve things over the raptors transfer rate.
Interesting snippet for you from Max Pc

Let’s first say that when we started this, we were absolutely sure we’d see a difference. Afterall, moving to an authentic SATA 6Gb/s cable cleared up our problems the first time right? Wrong. As we worked our way through the first few cables, we began to realize that the SATA I/O did its work when it first put together the Serial ATA spec for cables. There is virtually no difference between a brand-new SATA 6Gb/s marked cable made this year and one produced nearly eight years ago as far as performance goes. Expensive cable, cheap cable; long cable, short cable—none of it seemingly made a real difference. If anything, the minor variances in performance can be attributed to variances in the benchmark or the SSD.

Did you run Windows Experience Index before and after installing the SSD and see what it said, figure wise?

No point I think, it will go off my slowest drive (C) which the OS is on, a 7200 rpm hdd. It does, 7.3 cpu, 7.3 ram, 7.8 graphics. 5.9 primary hdd.
The SSD is for trainz only.
I know I'm flogging a dead horse (that reminds me, a new whip is needed) but another SSD is coming (ocz vertez ? 120 gb) for the OS and system drivers which will improve the figures.
I won't be needing any more drives.

Another question,
Using virtual disk manager via administrative tools it's set up as a primary drive (no partitions) xxx gb NTFS. Is this the correct format ?
It had to be formatted for windows to do it's thing and make it usable.
Also copying 2012 I used copy/paste from drive to drive, would a fresh install have been better ?

I can't remember what the specs of your PC are but I have to say you are getting great figures in WEI ! It is generally reckoned to be nearly impossible to get the maximum 7.9. 7.8 for the graphics is outstanding.

This article is worth reading http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/sata-6gbps-performance-sata-3gbps,3110.html

Intel Q9650 quad extreme @ 3ghz, MSI N560 GTX Ti twin frozr II, 8 gb kingston hyperx DDR2 and a clapped out mobo. A truly unbalanced set up.
And an 850 watt corsair PSU with bags of power.
Looking at the link did you notice the boot time was nearly the same using SATA II or III.

Well, my new SSD arrived today, a day early. Thank you eBuyer. I fitted it, started up and Windows informed me it had installed the device drivers for the new hardware. So I started up Explorer, and no sign of it. I then remembered the old saying, "when in doubt, read the manual". So I did. Learned that OCZ SSDs come unformatted. I have a freeware Partition Manager utility, so I fired her up and found I had to create a partition and then format, which I did. The manual had said R-click the drive and Quick Format. This is wrong, as the drive wasn't recognised by Windows until after the format. Anyway, all well.

I then copied my install of TS2009 to the new drive, and after Windows had done it's thing of calculating and calculating, it copied it over. It started at a massive 71MBs/sec which quite rapidly fell to single figures, so it took an hour instead of the initial, optimistic 7 minutes. I have to thank Shaneturner here for his "trainzprotocolchanger" utility which I used next. I also found that in the copying all the exe files had lost their "Run as administrator" property, so I reset that. Then I set The "Open with" for PEVs tools, and called that good.

Now, a slight problem, and I hope my experience will help anyone else who encounters this. I started Trainz, checked everything on the opening screen, went into Content Manager, and tried a DL, any old DL. All well. I still don't know what made me do this, but I'm glad I did. I opened the new DL for Edit in explorer, opened the config.txt, and changed the Username. It would not let me save, "Access Denied". I sat and puzzled for a while, and finally the brain cell kick-started belatedly and sluggishly into function mode. I recalled seeing a thread in the forums about this very thing. I found it and it pointed me to Shane's other invaluable utility "runasadministrator". I DL'd this, and when it tried to run, I closed it, R-clicked, "Run as administrator" and left it running. It takes it's time, it has a lot to do! If you're doing this, and have doubts whether it's stalled, open Task Manager and check the processes tab. If CPU and Memory use are greater than zero for the process, it's working. Leave it running, it gets there. Take a bow, Shane.

So, after all that, if anyone out there is thinking about getting an SSD for Trainz, go for it. I tried out my route, and it is so smooth in running, loads faster, and is an all-round better experience.

So, thanks to everyone who helped and advised me on this thread, and thanks to Shane, without who I would have been a bit lost.

Ken

Glad it's working as you expected, I didn't have the issue with run as admin for some reason. That's a big thing with this game, no solution is the same for all.

Neither did I have problems with run as Admin, don't think it's a problem on Win7 pro or higher. File disk to disk copying is restricted by the slowest disk in this case the one you are copying from. Glad to see it worked out for you Ken.
