What is realistic? Trainz is a video game after all - limited by the characteristics of the system on which it is played.
Also I hope the lighting will be improved. We have to wait unless someone says something official)
What are your opinions?
Until someone from N3V makes an "official announcement", such as at the release of new features in Trainz Plus, it is all speculation. In any case it is never a wise move for a software developer to announce new features long before those features are released.
By all means, lets present our opinions, our ideas, create wish lists of new features, but never complain when those expectations are not fully met.
My opinions.
What is realistic with rain, or snow is - turn off the sunlight! Part of that answer and in fact surely not too hard, is turn off shadows, and dim the light. They can do it more or less at sunset, so why not when it's pouring rain or snowing? Probably low on the list of things to do, but maybe with an extra staff member it will happen.

Yeah, the sunshine when it's raining and snowing, or just supposed to be gray and overcast is annoying. I also think the overall default lighting is still bit bright and washed out, but it has been improved over TANE at least.
Other "games" including alternative train sim products do put great stock in the environmental and weather effects.
I've just started a new playthrough of unmodded Skyrim which dates back to 2011, looks lovely in 4K which is something Trainz can't do properly.
Start with the basics and get rid of that awful bleached out look that many of the cabs impart on the outside scenery.
Complex systems may however further limit the ability of hobby level content creators to keep up with the new standards.
There are also many other core systems which need a complete overhaul - the spline system, tunnels, texturing vertical surfaces, AI despatcher/signaller for player train, proper timetable mode just to mention a few.

Agree.....and it would be nice if those on your list could be made as adjustable levels on a slider...from zero to max and inbetween.

Unfortunately that illustrates the problem. Yesterday, here in Sydney (and Alikiwi you may have experienced the same), we had a series of short intense rainfall events most of them in bright summer sunshine. This is not an uncommon weather feature here. So simply turning off the sunlight is not going to be realistic.
That's the problem with the weather - it never conforms to what you think it should be doing.
Personally, my opinion is that there are far more important issues in Trainz that should be much higher up the priority list than putting raindrops on the windscreens (why can't the loco and carriage creators do that?) or setting the "correct" light levels (see statement above) for rain or snow. I doubt that employing another programmer will produce a result that will keep everyone happy and how much more are we willing to pay for all these environmental "bells and whistles" (pardon the railway pun)?
