New 3d Tree

Seams to be a shortage of 3d trees so thats probably what ill be making for a while. I know there's a few out there but I used over 200 before with the older software.

What do you think?

Very nice, its a shame that this thread has been viewed 68x and this is only the 3rd comment.Very good and yes evan123 there is a shortage of 3D trees.Great work!!

hi, Hal

Thats looks very nice.
The Root ..a little bit darker please..
Exellent high for Citi's Layouts.

Keep up

two trees now

I made two trees using the same mesh. Ones a little fuller than the other. Both support LOD so if there a bit of a ways off the track they will load low poly cross crossed planes. There are no alpha problems with the planes either so you wont get that dithered look from them.

If nobody has any suggestions I think thier ready for upload to the DS.

Actually now that I look at it I dont like the leaf groups that are way out there at the side with the tree on the left. If I steal feel that way in themorning ill make that change.

Hi Hal.!! nice trees...!:)

Even with speedtrees, there will always be need for trees and more trees...

Do you use normal mapping on the leafs?

And what is the poly count?

..Loooking forward to see more trees from you...

hi, ...

Yes Hal, now it looks fine.
To last,an Idea in conclusion:
I do not know if the Leaves have a custom texture, or a Treetrunk with him?
Would it be a joint, you could still generate a leaf for the entire gradient. So, from light shades of green. Of course, discreetly.
If each Leaf have the same texture is of course not, then the light flow would be only locally on each sheet.

But that is perhaps more an idea that you can possibly develop in later models.

But as I said, beautiful trees. Just under 10m, these sizes are very nice to use.

Looks like a good start.
How big are the leaves though? Nothing nearby to check scale. Usually I use the Trainz person, checking leaves with them helps a lot since they should be about the size of a hand length roughly.

Thanks for all the comments.

Jankvis im glad you saw this post because it was your trees that inspired this. I saw them and thought man there cool...i want more... time to fire up blender!

No I dont yet have a normal map applied to the leaves of the trunk. I already know how to do normal maps so I think today ill work up a normal map. The texture for the trunk is tiled and im assuming that i can create a tile-able normal map there as well. Originally my idea was to have the leaves look more like leaf groups, but it didn't turn out that way. I liked the way it turned out so I just ran with it, but maybe a normal map can make it look more like leaf groups.

The vertace count of the tree on the right is higher than the other one almost 14k. I modeled the planes up and down so that the leaves were more curled looking. The second tree only has 3.4 vertaces. I was actually trying to make a lower poly LOD tree for the first. It was turning out to be very different so I just made it into a different tree. The leaves on that one are just four corner planes.

Iceman, yes this is about a 10 meter tree. Ill include another screen shot with it next to something else so that you can see the height better.

Everyone thanks for the comments and suggestions its a big help!

Hi again Hal!

It's nice of you to start making trees...we need more 3D vegetation...

The reason I asked about normal maps is it will improve the look of the leafs quite a lot. I don't use blender, but I guess it's easy to apply this?

Anyway, good luck to you and I will be following this thread....

Having some issues

Well the normal mapping isn't going so good. Unless your right up on the leaf you can barely see a difference. Also im not setting up the material correctly in blender because when I export the im file is egnoring the alpha channel and it looks like the screenshot below. If anybody knows what Im doing wrong there i need help on this part.

Here is a render from blender with normal mapping applied.

To be honest, I think some of the only native users posting work would be JRT & I. I'm sure there are other users out there who are on native but just aren't posting anywork. I think I can speak for both me and JRT when I say how much we need more 3D floral objects whether its trees, foliage, grasses etc etc. I'm trying to build routes just using native objects, and it is VERY difficult to find the necessary objects so I have to use some older content that is well.. Less then pleasant to look at.

So I am VERY pleased that more artists are moving towards the 3D. Go go go!

Even123 is right, we need more Native Mode Items. There is not enough. Such as splines. There are not vary many Native Mode splines for use for a drive way. I need one, but can't find one. We need more Native Mode Content. But the good news in all of this is that, some content creators are stepping up and doing a grate job. Thank you to all of there hard work.:D

Cheers,
JRT;)
