Narrow gauge screenshots

Experimenting with some basic ground textures.

And working on the relocated spur to the Whitaker Mine. (Now historically accurate, minus the railroad)

And some BIG standard gauge power for the interchange. ;)

Yeah, the textures are a default created bythe DEM program that made the map. (Courtesy of Pencil42) So those are the bare bones defaults which don't look very good close up, nut in satelight view look great. Panamimt Junction is the only place where I have really played around with textures. The base groundtexture I plan to used is by ferroequine on the DLS. I forget the specific name of the texture, but it's if Lone Pine, CA. Which isn't 'too' far away fromw where this route is set. I'll use that texture as a base and build upon it from there.

They are made by Pencil42 and they are indeed useful! To say I hate using the grading tool with a passion is a grave inderstatement. You just can't get the classic look of narrow gauge clinging to mountain sides with it. So I use these embankments quite often. I don't recall their specific name but its along the lines if "track fill" and there are several varyations. This one is a narrow sand fill.

One must master the gradient tool, and measure the RR terrain in Google Earth (you can set the default settings to display metric, globally), and apply those track spline point metric height measurements in Trainz

Dearnby:1960's

Thule_P: The location of Dearnby is fictional although I have used BR Eastern Region stock in the session. There's a Welsh castle in there, Cotswold houses, etc - anything picturesque. The station buildings are LNER so I suppose that pins it down for those who know.

It's not so much the height of the grade compared to the track, it's just that it's too wide! It's one thing if you're building a route with a double, three, or four track main. But for a dinky, little, rough and tumble narrow gauge railway it can be more of a hassle than a benefit. At least for me that's how it is. So I lean more towards using track splines with built in fill or use fill splines like I have here on the Mojave & Panamint. And that's also personal preference. I just find using fill and such make for a more realistic and 'organic' looking railroad.

Actually I have to correct myself here. I DO in fact use the apply grade tool. It's the roadbed tool I can't stand. You know, the one you use to conform the topography under the track to match the grade of the line? (Clear as mud, right?) Anyway, I hate using that tool because it makes such a wide roadbed and more so than what is generally needed. Even for standard gauge that create roadbed, or whatever that tool is called, is pretty darn wide unless you're making a multi track mainline. And hence my proficient use of track fill and roadbed splines.

Anyway, I hope that clears that up a bit. And keep the screenshots coming!! ;)

So I've got this project I've been working on for several months but I keep getting distracted...

This is what distracted me this morning.

That's looking great, Norm!! I'm guessing it's something you're still messing with. You do know about Pencil's NG30 track, right? That would look great here on this route! And I have a soft spot for the Puffing Billy railway, admittedly. ;)

Yes, track is on the list. This morning was devoted to getting shadowline's PB Belgrave to Menzies Ck,<kuid:51812:100814> route into TANE (which required loading it into TS12 and then exporting it to TANE). Followed by getting all of narrowgauge's rolling stock into TANE error free. (trainboi1's locomotive is in there too.) Then I fooled around with trees, not at all satisfied with those. Took a couple of screenies to see how it all looked then I had to go deal with the real world. I haven't even had a chance to drive the entire route yet.

Norm

One thing to remember is that the PBR (VR narrow gauge) existed because the country was too steep for standard gauge and normal radius tracks. The Belgrave station was built in a narrow valley with just enough room for a narrow platform, the platform track, a runaround track and an engine shed accessed by a turntable and most of that space had to be dug out of the side of the valley. The lines were built because only the narrow gauge could handle the country, it was not built because narrow gauge was cheaper, unlike the plains railroads in the States. It is nice to see it getting some recognition.

What errors did you find with my content? I thought I had fixed any that cropped up, and the DLS seems happy with them?

Norm

I am wrong!! I just looked at the stuff in CM and there are several items that need attention. I have had no notice from the DLS about these, wonder why.

Peter

Wow that was quick! Thanks Peter! I just discovered all of ntesdorf's stuff and wow again I had no idea there were these great ng routes available! Did you check your VR narrow gauge stuff Peter? I have problems with some of those too.

Edit: LOL, I just realized while I have problems with some of the VR stuff that is the only thing you have on the DLS, Your PBR locomotives and rolling stock isn't on the DLS and was gotten from Sir Gibby's site.

Wow when you combine narrowgauge's VR NA locomotives with his PBR locomotives you get a substantial chunk of all the narrow gauge locomotives the Victorian Railways had.

Of the 17 2-6-2s there are 6, the #6, 7, 8, 11, 12, and 14 (in 2 liveries) and the #42 (in 2 versions) of the two Garratts they had. Neat!

Thanks Peter!
