The answer is yes, but it must be done through Helpdesk, and can only be done once.

The way of doing this is to submit a ticket under Planet Auran and Accounts, including the username you want it changed to. Be aware that they will only normally allow one change.

P.S. The details will need to be updated all places where your login details are stored (Trainz itself, the forums, Planet Auran etc).

If changing user name requires so much work, that can only mean that N3V Games (Auran) product is not up to standard.
The product is software and in software changing a name, which is string of characters, is most trivial task one can imagine. But if as Auran says it cannot be done, it means their legacy system has such serious problems, I have doubts they will ever will be able to deliver a robust software.
What they are trying to do is to hide old problems under a new package. This helps their product as much as lipstick helps a pig. A classic example is extensive database repair - if database is programmed correctly, there is no need for user to perform time consuming repair, every time they install a new asset. There are thousands of other problems. For this reason I stopped at Trainz Classics and I am not going to spend a single cent, unless Auran produces reliable software. But to do it they need funds and here is the catch 22. I believe this company will be out of business in less than 10 years.
Yes, software. In software it is very easy to change a name.

At this time, we use a number of separate databases (forum, planet auran/DLS, DLC, etc), of which need to be linked together. Unfortunately, there are issues with linking some of these databases where changing usernames is concerned. As such, at this time, we cannot provide username changes except in extreme cases (e.g. where the username contains invalid characters, and hence Trainz doesn't log in). As there are issues with some of the database links, we need to manually change the username, which can take some time to complete. As such, we only provide username changes in extreme cases at this time.
We will be looking into this in future, however it is not a high priority issue, and as such will be some time before a solution is created. We would prefer to continue working on the stability of our websites, over a relatively little used system...
It may be 'easy', but it's still time consuming. As such, we've made the decision not to provide username changes at this current time. Again, would you prefer us to spend time on changing usernames, or fixing bugs, and working on the stability of our website?

I made a policy decision like that a few years ago when I headed up an IT shop overseeing a slew of different databases. It is indeed a pain in the rump, but as my CEO so pointedly told me, we serve the customer. Its their money and if we intend to have them spend some our way, we need to treat them as if they are the boss. If the customer is unhappy, they will leave. Come on Zec, you guys have done wonders making this thing into a real beauty, surely you can write a script to change usernames across the different databases without too much struggle. Customers don't like being told.. "no".

I agree with dstelley. Hopefully the username-change feature can be re-implemented in the future, as well as an avatar submission system.
Perhaps a system could be set up so that users submit an avatar, and it goes through a validation process where ones that are out of size or aren't GIFs of a train traveling to the left are rejected. The user could also specify a name for the train GIF in the submission process. I'd sure like to submit an avatar I made for my Matchbox locomotive and make and submit one for Paul Cass's Big Bertha locomotive.
If such a system is implemented, I'd be more than happy to monitor the submissions.
EDIT. PLEASE bring back the animated GIF avatars too! I used to stare at them for a good five minutes making sound effects before I started reading the posts!
