You see the 475 was built By the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Eddystone PA back in 1906. It was purchased for the Norfolk and Western for mix train service on N&W branch lines in VA. The 475 was retired from the N&W steam roster back in 1958-1959. In 1987 the 475 Was purchased by the boone railroad museum of Boone Iowa. But never run at boone. In 1991 the Strasburg purchased the 475 from the Boone Railroad museum. And it took two years for the 475 to be returned to steam. In 1993 the 475 had made it's debut at strasburg. Then in 2006 the 475 turned a 100 years old. Then in 2010 the 475 was it's long scrapped sister 382 for a photo charter.

N&W had locomotives before 475. It's not the oldest.

Actually if you want a realistic perspective on that, thats done to save brake wear on both the steam engine and passenger cars, it has little or nothing to do with power, except maybe if they can provide HEP for the cars.

They use the Dynamic brakes of the two SD40-2's rather then using the automatic train brakes, or even the independent brakes on the steam engine, that way none of the brake shoe's get as much wear as they would without the two diesels.

I learned that from the guy's at the UP steam shop.

It is okay for you to have a conversation with other members about locomotive restorations and operations; however, I advise you not to post images or statements not relating to the original topic of the thread. Non-related images are a waste of bandwidth, and if your actions continue, this thread will be closed and you might get a reply from Zec. I am in no way against this thread, I am just trying to stop it from derailing and turning into a cyberfight.

DP, Can I make a suggestion for you.


Stop posting pictures scattered in various threads. Why don't you make a single "Strasburg pictures thread" and post all Strasburg related images in there. That way the rest of us can choose to view random Strasburg images, or not to.

And when you make a thread, don't post any images no related to the topic

Everyone else, prepare for the future madness. Since they will clearly never perma-ban dpfan1, this means that he will keep coming back. First he was banned for two weeks, then for two months. Then he was banned for two weeks, and came back again after two months. So, he will back on Halloween. HORRORS! Though hopefully, he will be too busy with Trick-Or-Treating and eating his Halloween candy to bother with the forum. I only wish I could figure out where this moron lives, because I would send his neighbors lumps of coal for when he comes asking for candy. :hehe:

But that's just wishful thinking. This forum in November is going to suck...

Apparently he lives in "AMITY PARK.":o I am very happy he has been banned. If he would've just listened to us, we could have helped, but he just kept on with his nonsense. I seriously doubt he even PLAYED TRS2006 (I asked but he ignored my comment and started on with more pics...). Well, I guess this thread can die peacefully, until Dpfan1 comes back in November...
