My computer and TANE

Good evening everyone. I was just curious if my computer would be able to handle Trainz: A New Era smoothly. Right now, I am running Trainz 2010 in compatibility mode and so far, a majority of the routes run at around 40fps and above. My graphics settings are almost at max in Trainz 2010. My system specs are below. Right now at the moment, I don't really have money to shell out for upgrades on the PC but if my system does not have enough power to run TANE, would there be a way to optimize my PC so that it could possibly run the simulator better.

Processor : AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition @ 3.4Ghz (stock CPU fan)
Motherboard : Gigabyte GA UD3 970A ATX motherboard
Power Supply : Ultra Limited Edition 700W PSU
Graphics Card : EVGA GTX 550Ti 1GB GDDR5 @ 981Mhz with FPB
RAM : 16GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 in a dual channel configuration
Hard Drive : Seagate Barracuda 1 TB 7200RPM with 64MB cache
Case : Zalman Z9
Monitor : Viewsonic 23" LED monitor (1920x1080 resolution)
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit System Builder Edition

Thank you Jonhwhelan and John514. I think I will save for an SSD so that way, TANE will have it's own drive and perhaps run it between medium and max settings. I have heard that Trainz will run better on a PC if it is installed on it's own drive instead of the main OS drive. Hopefully, the fps will be above 30 for all routes. If I can get 60fps on the new simulator, that would be really good. I am on a budget though so I'm hoping when TANE is released, I can find a 256GB to 512GB for a decent price, somewhere between $100-$200. I know my Phenom II quad core processor is old compared to today's AMD processor but I think it has the muscle to handle TANE, especially if overclocked. Other than that, if I can get an SSD, then the GTX 550Ti should be just fine at stock speeds.

An SSD doesn't have a direct impact on performance unless storage is the bottleneck causing FPS dips. Personal example, I generally get fairly poor performance with my R9 270X (7870) when loading multiple assets on detailed routes unless I am using my SSD over my HDD for storing Trainz. It's the constant loading of assets from a slow storage medium that causes the problems. The R9 270X isn't the bottleneck as it is a reasonably strong GPU whereas your GTX 550Ti may be a different example all together considering it is a significantly weaker card. You will probably see some benefit but if you're restricted as far as graphics options are concerned even with fast storage then it might be time to consider an upgrade.

SSDs do not make that much of a difference to frames per second, perhaps one frame per second better. What they do is allow the large number of small files that Trainz currently uses to load faster ie things pop up in the game quicker. Since we don't yet know much about how TANE works it could be using larger files for example an SSD may or may not make a difference. Some of the 4 terabyte multiplater drives have very fast transfer rates in the order of the old Raptor drives and these might be better suited to TANE, we'll have to wait and see.

Cheerio John
