How do you measure track miles when two tracks of a main line temporarily split more than 50 meters apart and when they rejoin their mileage measurements are not the same ?

I have made a several "measurement consists" to measure track with
(1 Mile consist with longer ones containing more than one 1 Mile "measurement consist" - 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,20,30,40)

Mile post placement does not always reflect the exact milage. When the original track was laid for a line, the mile posts were noted and were fairly accurite. However, as lines were realigned which might cause shortening or stretching, the line was never remeasured. Since the mileposts are publihed in a timetable, to change them would outdate all timetables. Instead, the mileposts would be stretched out or bunched up to keep the mileposts in their relative positions. On any given line, you may find as little as .4 miles between mileposts and possible over two miles where the route had been stretched. So, the minor difference in your example - take an average between the longer and the shorter and call it good enough.
