Mozilla vs: CDP

Content Manager Plus! If you have TRS2006 or later this will have been installed with your Trainz software. Open it up and drag your .cdp file onto it. See what happens!

Jonny

CDP files are not plain text or a standard graphics file format, so web browsers can't display their contents. Web browsers can download CDP files though.

CDP files can be opened with:
  • TRS2004's Content Dispatcher
  • TRS2006's CMP
  • CDP Browser 2 (a utility published by Trainz Pro Routes which displays a list of the assets contained in the CDP)
By default Trainz should associate CDP files with the appropriate program to install them. If this association has been lost, it can be re-established in Windows Explorer or by running Content Dispatcher etc.

You're so kind and patient John!

Considering this guy's got creations of his own - plus 1285 posts...
You should not jump on American_Connections just like that as you do not exactly know what his problem was and how to fix it!

Mozilla FireFox in its quirky way DOES NOT SAVE a cdp file (although it saves something for a second or two), it saves a reference to it I guess when trying to d/load it from certain web sites like TPD and you tell FireFox to save this file. In other words, although you tell FireFox to save this file, it does NOT do this nor does it give you a choice where to save this file to!!

However, if you click on "Open" this file in FireFox's menu when trying to d/load it, the flipping damn thing (Mozilla) FireFox WILL ask you what program opens up this file. If you ignore this, you can indeed SAVE the CDP but again, no choice given where to save it to. If you do not know the location where this file gets saved to, you will not find it as this flipping damn Mozilla saves the CDP to a temporary location in your TEMP files and does NOT give you the choice where to save it to!

Hence American_Connections asking his question! One has to go to "TOOLS" to find "Downloads", find the file to right click it and with it find the folder where the damn thing got saved to. If you think the file gets saved to where FireFox normally saves files to from other web sites or you "save as..." and you tell FireFox to delete your d/load references in its Download window, you are stumped to find it as you do not know where it is saved to.....

I d/loaded a 300 MB route from somewhere and this happened to me too and I had to d/load this file again. When you are on a satellite INet connection and on a tight d/load limit, you can see how and where I got frustrated when I had to download a file again I d/loaded already but could not find its location.

It amazes me time and time again, when some programmers go out of their way for miles to make some programs so user unfriendly when Blind Freddy could plainly see there is a much better way to implement certain ways in a program.

Just try to COPY some text in Mozilla FireFox. The menu opening up is a long menu and one still has to scroll past the bottom of its long list of this long menu to get to the COPY command. You would think that this command would be one of the most used commands in a browser and hence it would be at or near the top of this menu but NO, a programmer thought otherwise and placed it way down there where one has to scroll past to get to it. He or she should be locked for 12 months in a room with nothing else than FireFox to play with, perhaps then and only then he/she will see the light. Or perhaps not.

FireFox does exactly the same quirky way with WinZip files and possibly other files too when trying to save them from certain web sites, with Zip files at least you can tell FireFox to use WinZip or WinRAR to open it with and then save this to the location YOU WANT IT TO in WinZip or WinRar. Now why can't FireFox do the same?

Call me a grumpy old man but am I right or am I right? :p

Cheers

Umm, I'm a Proud user of Firefox, and I haven't EVER had an Issue with .cdps.

Updating Firefox is always a good idea too... O_o

Strange that  I've been using nothing but Firefox since buying my first copy of Trainz & I've downloaded plenty of cdp's while using it, when I first downloaded a file it asked me where I wanted it saving too, I told it "desktop" (that way I can scan it first, before letting it loose in my machine), since then it has always saved any downloads (inc. cdp's) to my desktop, from there it just requires me to double click the icon & presto, the item is in my "despatcher downloads" folder. :)

As I wrote "from certain web sites...", just go to TPD's or the TrainzItalia web site with FireFox and try to d/load Charlie Whitepass's boxcars or any other CDPs from there and you will see what I mean

Sure, I can save a CDP from the DLS by right clicking its FTP link and "Save as...." and FireFox will save it. Some other web sites link their CDP's to another DL.php page which will then move you on to the CDP link directly and then this will open up its "Open or Save" dialog menu, this is what I was refering to. I guess this is what American_Connection was writing about as the same happened to me when accessing TPD or even the TrainzItalia web sites.

I also use FireFox's latest version, other than the quirks I pointed out above for certain web sites, I am happy with it, exception being, try copying a URL and paste it in its URL slot and pressing "Enter" (as you do with most other browsers), FireFox refuses to go to there. Or try to click any link it displays in its URL slot menu, which you looked at some time before, the same happens and FireFox will not open these. At least with me it does not. Strange indeed.

Just been to the TrainzItalia site & downloaded the FS D145.2000
It did just as I said, it opened a window asking me if I wanted to "Run or Save", I clicked "Save" & it saved the cdp to my desktop where I double clicked & the item was unpacked to my Despatcher Download folder.
I checked it with TrainzObjectz & apart from 3 missing kuids, everything was as normal.

No problems with pasting URL's here however looks like you have something slightly amiss with FF's configuration happens to some that pasting using right click doesn't work, often it's due to one of the extensions, Yahoo being one of the worst.. Try Control V that usually works in FF if it wont accept a right click paste.

The thing with Firefox is when it updates it retains settings from your previous version, probably the easiest way to sort it out is to completely remove it, clean the registry and reinstall.

Just my 2 cents here but I found it better to use an add-on called FlashGot along with download manager Getright. I have had very few problems, but some sites dont like DLM's(download managers). I believe it was a russian or czech.
This has worked for me for the last 2 -3 years.

For me, Firefox always saves the actual file.

You can make Firefox ask where to save files. In V3.5.2 the option is Tools > Options > Main >Ask me where to save files (it might be in a different place in older versions).

CDPs

First, I do not want to save the file, I want to open it for download. In one aspect I do this to test that my links are correct, I also tried to open from the DLS and FF does not find a program to do this, where Explorer did it automatically. Tabs even spread all over the page instead of being grouped. There seems to have been a problem with an update that would open dispatcher off the screen, but I think I go back to Explorer, as it did work before. Firefox is so slow and I have to do four steps to get what Explorer did in one step. And thanks for your support on my behalf, Vinnybarb, you gave a very good answer too!

First, I do not want to save the file, I want to open it for download.
In Firefox, try Tools > Options > Applications > Content Dispatcher Pack > in the dropdown list select Use Other > Content Manager Plus

But for testing links you can opt for saving, then when it asks you where to save click Cancel.

#1- There is no CDP listed in applications. #2- Again I say, I want to OPEN the file. There is no reason to save these CDPs, just makes you files crowded and takes up memory space.

I don't know the answer to that.

You could download the files, install them, then delete them.

But if you're happier using IE or Chrome or Opera fair enough, no probs.

To be or not to be!

I have conducted an update to Explorer 8 and all works as before. Much faster than Mozilla, and I have all my links back! I thank ya'll for your help and opinions.

I checked FireFox's options again and guess what? After my last upgrade to the latest version of it where FF is supposed to take over and use my presently used options with the old version, apparently this changed with the new upgrade. In my new options I had "Save to Desktop" enabled (I guess a default option as I never used this option before), which unfortunately does not save it there as it is supposed to and does only what I described further up this post.

I now changed this option to "Ask me where to save it" and this now saves the CDP wherever I nominate this to. I had this particular option enabled in my previous version of FF, before its upgrade.

The moral of the story is, I guess, to check FF's options again after an upgrade, just to be sure :o. It might save one getting a red face. :hehe:.

I've mentioned in another thread that I can't use Firefox to download assets to CMP from the DLS and so have to use IE7 for that.

Like American_Connections I notice that Content Dispatcher Pack is not listed under the Applications tab in the Tool > Options menu for my version of Firefox. Does anyone know how to add missing applications to Firefox's list as I suspect this is the cause of the problem?
