Move Layout to a New PC

Apologies in advance as I know I have seen something about this in the forums, I just cant find it.......

I am in the process of installing Trainz onto another PC with more memory and a slightly faster graphics card. I have the Settle and Carlisle add on. I have a couple of fairly big layouts that I would like to move onto the new PC. What is the easiest way to do this?

Just a couple of notes:

1. I have quite a lot of 3rd party add ons in these layouts.
2. The original PC is Windows Vista and the new one is Windows 7.

The best way to do this to:

1) Copy the UserData folder to an external device such as an external hard drive.

2) Install Trainz TS2010 on your new machine like you normally do, putting in any service packs should you need them.

Once that is installed, copy your old Userdata folder over from the external drive to your new TS2010 install. This process may take some time to do, so do something else while this process takes place.

After everything is installed, open up Content Manager like you normally would, and perform a Quick Database Repair.

Going forward you will have your new Trainz install with old data already to go.

One important thing though with Windows 7. Unless it's the Professional or Ultimate/Enterprise/Business edition, you will need to run Trainz as administrator.

Ok thanks Shane, it installed ok and has not so far asked me for admininstrator rights, does this mean it is already installed with administrator rights or does this just have a direct bearing on transferring the UserData folder?

If you don't get a Yes/No or Continue/Cancel box when launching, this means it's not running as administrator, and may result in it losing settings that you set in-game or even save data.

Moving Again!

Ok so the PC I moved to isn't up to running some of the stuff I would like (Potteries Loop Line on TS12) so I have bought a proper gaming machine this time. I have a few questions if anyone can help;

1. When I copied my TS10 Userdata folder last time my Trainz launcher window lost the tutorials block. This happened with my initial PC and copying the Userdata folder imported the problem. While not critical I would rather keep it if possible. I have a couple of routes which I want to keep and few payware locos (plus the S&C add on) is there a way to import these to a new installation without copying the Userdata folder?

2. Are there any things I should watch out for installing TS10 on the new Windows 8.1 machine, and later installing TS12 (plus the S&C add on in both installations)?

3. What is the best way to import the routes I made in TS10 to a new TS12 installation.

4. Am I right in thinking that any assets used in a TS10 route that does not use compatibility mode will work in TS12?

5. What's the best way to import assets downloaded or bought for TS10 into TS12?

6. With the S&C add on, should I install it before or after copying assets from my Userdata on the previous PC?

Sorry for all the questions but I would rather get it right first time if possible.

The alternative fix of course would be to repair the tutorials in my existing installation before copying, does anyone know how I might have caused them to disappear?

OK - have you checked for faulty assets?

I have a lot of faulty assets listed, I wouldn't really know how to start identifying the ones that could cause this problem. If once I've installed TS10 to my new PC and done the updates, I copy the Userdata folder and merge it rather than overwriting the freshly installed one (in other words not overwrite any files), would this leave the bits that were missing or faulty on the old installation untouched on the new installation, do you think?

Also should I install the S&C add on before or after copying the Userdata folder to the new installation?

Ok I installed TS10 on my Win 8.1 laptop and it works fine, I set both the desktop shortcut and the program file in the TS10 folder to run as administrator.

The problem is that quite often (but not always) my quick drive preferences (weather, time of day, control type etc) revert to default even though I saved them in surveyor. In addition I lose some driver commands that I added.

Anyone know how to fix this?
