Montreal Central Station

well i formated my pc this fall, backed up everything (so i thought). I actually backed up the session instead of the route for the Montreal route I had been working on for months noooooooooooooooooo. Anyway this kind of discouraged but i may try to start over sooner or later... what a pain in the butt : )

That's really a tough break, so sad. :'( But now you know exactly what you want to do so it should be easier the second time round. :) Do you have incremental backups of the map files? Perhaps all is not lost.

Sorry to hear about that Robby. At least now you have a chance to rebuild it better if you'd like. :)

How far out were you planning on building? I could look into getting a DEM for you if you'd like of an area. ;)

I'd eventually like to go as far east as Matapedia but that's a long term goal, anything short of that would be great if you can find the DEM's...

that would then connect to my NB route that runs from Bathurst to Matapedia...

Is this an option in trainz? If you mean a backup of my drive then it's no and is lost but if Trainz has this option it would be sooo great...

I save new versions of my maps at strategic points in their development so if I change my mind, I can always go back to specific times and continue in another direction. The drive with Trainz is periodically backed up so only changes since the last backup would be lost if a disaster happened. Trainz itself will auto-save at set intervals but that wouldn't help in this case.

I don't need to find the DEM's: I should be able to make them. :) I'm not sure how to combine them but I will look into making one of the Montreal area for you (it's something I thought about making for myself later anyhow).

It has been a while since I've made them but if I am successful, I will PM you. Buying transDEM is a good deal though if you plan on building something long and prototypical. It also saves a lot of work with the terrain and the laying of tracks.

Which version of trainz do you use?

What era are you modeling? Only before 1962 would it have been possible to see much of the train station from the outside. Since then, Place Ville Marie covers most of the northern approach to the station. Much of the southern approach is now through the Place Boneventure building. Although the upper part of the arrival / departure hall can be seen behind the Queen Elizabeth Hotel, it is not much to look at. The really interesting architecture is on the inside.

Shameless plug :o

This is what covers the northern approach to the station

I will leave Place Bonaventure to anyone else who wants to exercise their modeling skills. Note the because the station is on a slope, the southern tracks actually pass through this building, exiting at the second story level on the south side and continuing on a viaduct towards Point Saint Charles and the Victoria Bridge.

I am modeling the entry from place bonaventure heading eastward towards quebec. I have part of place bonaventure done as far as where the trains enter, the tougher yet essential part i now want to do is the inside of the track/platform area. this will require many textures which will probably take me a while to perfect....

Where exactly, in reference to place bonaventure, does this asset go? Wat i am planning is just a large rectangular box that contain the platform deviders and stairs perhaps so the outside could be covered with the above asset and others...

thanks!

Amtrak Service to Montreal?

If I remember correctly, Amtrak provides service to Montreal from New York City enroute to Toronto or straight to Montreal. I could be wrong, but I think I'm right.

Those are 2 different trains

"Adirondack" Trains 68 and 69 (70 and 71 on weekends) runs between New York, Albany and then north to Montreal.
"Maple Leaf" Trains 63 and 64, runs between New York, Albany, Buffalo, Niagara Falls NY, Niagara Falls Ontario and along Lake Ontario using CN's Grimsby and Oakville Subdivisions, into Toronto Union.

VIA Rail is currently the only passenger train operator between Montreal and Toronto with VIA trains 71, 53, 43, 57, 61, 45, 65, 47, 67, 69 and 51.

PVM is just north of the station. It straddles the approach tracks and the ends of the platforms.

The southern ends of the platforms go through Place Bonaventure.

In order, from north to south: PVM, Queen Elizabeth Hotel, Central Station, a parking garage, Place Bonaventure.

Google Earth shows this very well except that Central Station is not obvious. You see the roof of the main hall but all the entrances and exits are in surrounding buildings. From the street, there is little to see of the station itself.

My pleasure Robby. Glad I could help you! Looks like a good start...I'm guessing you are going to make some buildings for it too right?

Keep up the great work!

Yes i probably will. I think I am going to try and get a long ways of track done then focus on the station inside and then fill in with buildings. I want to try and use as much built in content as possible though so it's easier to use for others... We'll see what time brings :)

Cool. Every person builds differently, but the way that suits you is the best way to go. I prefer to texture last but that's just me.
