Mono sound?

I was reading in one of the "horn making guides" about how in audacity (or any other audio editor program) that you must convert the horn sound from stereo to mono. Now I am by no means an audio head, but mono is single, as in one? I say this because when watching a train go by from the free roam view, you can hear how the sound doesn't blend from one speaker to the other, it just bluntly shoots from one to the other. What I'm wondering is why Trainz wasn't built around a stereo setup, for surround sound, ect... A second thought, is the horn sound the only thing that's mono?

Just tryin' to figure out the game lol :D

cheers!

Mono does mean single. In audio, it means that there is one track that is played for the left and right speakers. Stereo has a seperate sound track for left and right sides. The doppler effect, in TS12, does make the sound do strange things. It can be disabled in the Main Menu in Trainz itself.

As far as I know, every sound file in Trainz has to be mono. I've made track sounds, engine sounds and horn sounds and they all had to be mono.

To add to what captainkman said, Trainz apparently produces 3D directional (stereo) sound based on the location of the origin of a sound effect in the 3D camera view, e. g. if an object with a sound effect is located at the left side of the screen, its sound effect will play in the left speaker. Hence you can see why Trainz sound files must be mono, as Trainz's sound output is apparently real-time 3D directional/stereo sound as aforementioned and it is understandable that a stereo sound effect would interfere with that.

That certainly does make sense. It's just odd because it has such a rough transition, unlike other games, not necessarily simulators per say, but other games in general. I'll see if disabling the doppler has any effect on the sound. Thanks guys, info in much appreciated
