I had a pc crash and had to re-install Widows and in Trainz I am getting a problem which says I need d3dx9_42.dll and cannot load.

On a search I got a link but you had to buy a programme to get that file. Can it be got free?

Hello Shane,

Excuse the ignorance but I am not exactly sure where that d3dx9_42.dll missing file is on your site. Is this under some sub-heading?

Appreciate the input all. It is asking me where to install the file??

The download will want to extract the files (install). By default they will want to go to C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR LOGIN NAME\Local Settings\Temp in Windows XP. For Windows 7, they will go to C:\Users\YOUR LOGIN NAME\AppData\Temp

Once the files have been extracted, go to one of these files using Windows Explorer then run DX Setup from there.

For Windows 7, it is recommended that you run the installer as Administrator, so right-click on the dxsetup.exe and choose Run as Administrator. Click OK when prompted by the system to run.

Hello John,

Bit puzzled here actually. I downloaded the exe file to the desktop. When I go into it a small box comes up asking me where I want to place the extracted files to??

Have installed it. When I try to go into my N. Ireland Rly project I get the window indicating damage. "ERROR MAP IS MISSING OR DAMAGED.
Your selected route is damaged or has missing files.
Return to the desktop, etc, etc.

I thad a copy of this route and put it on another pc (from a portable HD) and into Trainz10 - it works there but that pc isn't as good re the graphics so I get a bit of stuttering (unlike the gaming machine I was originally using for this and had been in TRS09 there before this damn crash. I dare say I could continue the build there at least in TRS10 rather than the game machine where I have the big problem. That shows over 600 files it doesn't recognise!

Obviously I would have prefferred to use the original machine but with 600+ files it doesn't recognise but leaves me musing.

I think that my biggest problem is no longer that file but the dashed pc.It is No 1 of two computers and due to it's good graphics reserved for Trainz. It badly crashed a while ago and got a techy up and the OS had to be re-done however it went again recently and even with the disk he gave me it didn't seem right. Fortunatelyusing one of the 2 copies of my Ulster project I decided to try on the second pc which had TRS2010 (the other TRS2009) and with some sigh of relief saved a year and a half work. The second pc isn't overclocked like the Trainz one was but it gives me a chance to continue working even with some stuttering. Later I will get another "games" pc for Trainz. So means I now work in TRS010 and even though there are a couple of zilch cdp's at least I can get on with a demanding project. It struck me the games machine wasn't going right when I did a dummy line and noticed things were partly see through. So for now I stick with the second pc and the upgraded Trainz version.

Had I lost all that massive effort (now three-quarters up the longest of the 6 lines to Londonderry) I would have disappeared to Edinburgh and for a Glaswegian that would have been tantamount to no life!
