meshes without CMP

my computer is in the repair shop at the moment, but it was gonna try my hand at creating some trains and buildings on Gmax.

however, me being an impatient teenager, i have since given up, deciding that creating my own content is beyond me.

instead, i wanted to reskin some content and create my own liveries (again using Gmax as ts2009 no longer has paintshed)

unfortunatley, as my computer is in for repairs (and my laptop will die if i install anything else), i no longer have access to any of the meshes i need to edit.

million pound question;
is there anywhere i can find the mesh files i need (just some basic stuff found on the DLS, i'm not trying to cheat people out of impressive payware) to create my custom content????

You would need to contact the asset creator, as only they will have the required files.

Also, you will probably need permission to use the files.

Also, a mesh can only be edited with the original files (not the .pm/.im/.lm files)

Hello,

While Shane is correct about not being able to edit a mesh file, I believe the question here is about reskinning! You do not use GMax or blender or 3ds for reskins. You use a photo manipulation product such as Paint Shop Pro, Photo Shop, Gimp, Paint.net, etc.

The tool you use to open the folders containing an asset, depends on the version of trainz you are using. Anything up to and including 2004 can be edited directly in folder. However, you really should create a new asset and change the kuid to yours and give full credit to the original creator. If you plan to distribute, you must also get permission from the original creator to do so.

For 2006 and above, you should use cmp to create a clone then open the clone for edit in explorer. This places a new copy of the asset in the editing folder and automatically updated the kuid to yours. Once the asset is in the editing folder you can then used explorer to find the .tga, or bmp file of the asset and open it with your photo editing software, make the changes you wish, save as uncompressed then use cmp to commit the changes and you should find the asset in surveyor.

remember to change the name of the asset so you can find it easier in surveyor

Thanks for your help guys.

i think i'll just resign myself to waiting for my computer to get back.

i've been told i can reskin on Gmax, but i'll certainly look into photoshop and other reskin methods.

in the meantime, it's time to mock up some things on paint.
