Merging mishap

..........
Good evening fellas: I'm making my first attempt at this. My problem is this: I'm getting an error message in the "merge with box". It says two or more have the same name, names must be unique. I have 2 each of route layer, TransDEM UTM, and TransDEM vector. I'm not sure how to deal with this. Could some kind soul point me in the right direction? I'm not sure how or where to change the names.

Thanks, cheers....Rick

Hi Rick,

This has to do with the layers. You need to drag the route layer into the layers box. There will be a dialog box that asks if you want to do this.

A bit of a warning though. There's a bug with merging in TS12. This can cause the program to crash. The cause is unpredictable and has something to do with memory, or content on the baseboard. I have gotten the merging to work by removing objects from the baseboards first.

First step is buy TS2010 or wait for the TS12 patch that fixes the merge bug. :sleep:

What I do is open the layers tab on the route I plan to merge into the other one;

Click on where it says Route-layer and start typing, change the name of the layer to something like "merge".

Thanks guys; I will give it a go in a few minutes. I've been thinking about buying older versions, not because of problems like this (which I did not know about), but just to at least have a look at them.

Crashing you say!? Well, that's something I have not had problems with.....yet. Thanks, again, it's sure nice to have some smart people to turn to, even if they are a little insane!

I only have the basic track on the baseboards. I'm hoping to get the whole route laid out, then discover all kinds of new problems to deal with!

Cheers.....Rick

Well, I don't know what to tell ya!? I was all ready to tackle the merge with your info, when the wife told me one of my old working buds was on the way to the house. Oh, poo I thought (something like that), just when I was hoping to fix it up. I took one last look at it, removed 3 "tiles?", tried the merge again, saw all the same error messages, but for some reason I now have the 2 sections of the map joined and it looks fine. The 3 tiles I removed were overlapping. I guess that was the problem. Thanks guys, stay healthy, I'm sure I'll need your advice many more times!

Thanks, again, cheers.......Rick

Good morning gentry; Well, I got 3 parts of the route merged. I have to do it a little differently than I am supposed to. Most of the route is no longer there, but it does show up as a trail, which is what it is in real life. When using TransDEM I cannot see the trail in the first part of the operation. I have to put a small section of track on the map and then move on. On the next map I can now see the trail and lay out the route. All SEEMS to be going well. Luckily I can see the trail for the whole route clearly marked in open street view with a _ _ _ kind of line. The two sections I added line up perfectly in all dimensions. There was a "bare baseboard" strip on the second section of the route where the third section joined. Lucky for me it was an over lapping area and I just removed it. I hope it keeps going smoothly. I'm not deleting any of the parts of the route or the sessions that are showing up for some reason. When I get the map done I may need your expert help again, if I can't figure out how to save the work and back it up somewhere. It's great to know that some Trainz gurus are here, willing to help those with smaller brains! Thanks for all the help I have been given. Maybe someday I can help someone.

Cheers........Rick
