MBTA Coaches

I figure this might be of interest to John Citron and other MBTA fans. Heading into Philly mid-day, I caught two sparkling bi-level coaches that had been cut off from a freight on the main parallel to the passenger tracks, about 25 miles northeast of the city. Seems a little odd that half of a train was cut off on the main here as there is a yard; trains usually pull in if they have traffic bound for this yard, the adjacent NS yard, or nearby Northeast Corridor.

Evidently, this is the second time in a month MBTA coaches have been transiting north through the area, I'm guessing from an overhaul. Not sure if they actually went up the NEC though or continued on CSX, but hopefully you'll be seeing some new(ish) coaches in the next day or so.

The cars are most likely on their way back up here from the Hyundai Rotem plant in Philly where they are being built and or overhauled. There are some new cars on the way plus some repairs done to some existing ones which had some quality issues.

The cars will be moved via the CSX as you say, but whether they go via Selkirk to Boston on the old B&A or up the NEC is unknown. We're not so lucky on the north side to get the double-deck cars due to clearance problems and for some reason the new Old Colony division gets all the new equipment.

My guess is CSX to Selkirk, then to Worcester, where they will complete the journey to South Station via what is now "state trackage."

I was thinking that to after I posted. I forgot about the recent state trackage now that CSX has been banished from Boston proper.
