Making a black locomotive

how do I make a black skin for a loco but retain the texture
I am making a W&LE SD40-2

You DON'T color it black. You use shades of dark grey.

i use grey level 18 for brand new black paint. like Dave said, NEVER color anything 0,0,0 black.
