Major game issues

I bought Trainz 12 off of steam yesterday. Went to play it today and for some reason I can not play multi-player, it says I have to download some things, I click yes and they all turn red, says "can not connect to host, check internet connection". This is driving me nuts. And the content manager is no help, it wont download anything, they all turn red. My firewall is off, anti virus is off, and I have a cable internet. Any ideas before I ask for refund? Am I doing something wrong, oh and my build is 53389.

Can't answer about Multi-Player except as mentioned below.
In the Content Manager, File, settings, you may need to add your name and password in the Internet tab. (If you haven't already.)
About a week after I purchased TS12, I gave up and bought a FCT. You will probably never catch up on the updates without the FCT.
Before you can play Multi-Player, my understanding is that the built-in items have to be up to date. In the game, click on updates. There will be several hundred updates that need to be downloaded.

I have a feeling that the firewall may be blocking essential Trainz communication.

Check whether this is the case, and if it is, try adding an exception in the firewall program for the core Trainz executable programs.

I just checked my copy and I'm having no problems updating assets from the main game menu.(the green screen). The game does have to validate your key and username before allowing the download process to work. Other than the build number which should be 53389, the steam version works exactly like the normal version from Auran. I'm running through a Linksys router with no special ports open. If you added the CD Key in the launcher/options panel. You should be working unless your windows firewall is blocking the program.
