Months ago I thought maybe AMD might have a chance with the upcoming “Bulldozer” CPU but some of the recent rumors about the CPU's performance hasn’t been that good (I hope they are wrong).

Wow, this thread quickly turned into a "Who has the best processor?" topic. This is a Trainz, not a computers forum! If you want to discuss about that, go ahead and visit a computer forum.

You may want to take that back. This is the 'Parts and 'Labour' forum where users post about, and ask for, information about computer hardware. The responses posted will help Trainzers to make informed decision when buying new hardware

I have phenom x6 6gb ram and ati 5770 and i still get lag and latyl it bin getting wrose
 
I found a solution that eliminated most lag for me, what I did was launch trainz, press ctrl alt delete and open Task manger.

Click on Processes
(ensure you click show processes from all users)

Find the trainz launcher exe. and right click it

Click set priority and choose high

This worked for me, not sure if it will work for everyone but I thought it was worth posting,

That's a bit weird. I run trainz on a dell laptop with integrated graphics and a pentium inside processor @2.16GHz. Some routes with lots of detail will play with around 20-30fps. I'm a bit confused here because I am also looking to get a desktop soon or try to build a computer. So the key is to get a dedicated graphics card that can keep up with the speed of the processor? I thought a dedicated graphics card with at least 512mb was good enough.
 
Apples and oranges, some people are talking about TS2010 and TS12, which requires a LOT more horsepower than TS2009. 2009 will run on a Pentium 4, 2010 calls for dual cores as a minimum.
 
Major lag

I have a really big problem with lag in TS12. I got the game 2 days ago and i have finished the tutorials with little to no problem but then i went on to do the Mojav sub division and it has so much lag, it took me 45 minutes to play 15 minutes in game and the computer kept freezing up. And the sessions and routes take almost 45 minutes to load.
I had no problem with trainz 2006 why am i having problems now with TS12? and how can i fix it? :(

I have a vista that is 4 years old, a NIVIDA graphics card, at least 64 free OS GB space and a decent RAM.
Maybe i need a new computer?

Lower left corner of the desktop, click the Start button, then Run, and type DXDIAG in the window. You'll get a utility from that which will tell you what you need to know about your system other than "a NIVIDA graphics card, at least 64 free OS GB space and a decent RAM." Decent RAM comes in a lot of different speeds and gigabytes, Nvidia has been making video cards for 10 years so which model of Nvidia card you have makes a difference, and you didn't mention your CPU at all.

I am running trs2006 on a Pentium 4 Dual Core 3.4GHz and with 1GB of DDR2 ram and a 64MB ATI Radeon x300 series. It freezes up constantly and crashes. Would upgrading the RAM and Graphics card help?
 
okay, I may have a solution. my computer has an Intel Pentinum as well. I get decent frame rates on TS10, but with some lag in heavily object-ed areas. Same with TS12, but with just a bit more lag. The processor has 3.2 GhZ processor, so maybe you should consider that? dunno, im like you, im no whizz with computers.
 
TRS2006 runs pretty darn well on my ancient, low end Toshiba Satellite 105, integrated graphics laptop, 1.75GHz CPU, 2 GB RAM, PeeUney 110 GB HD
The CMP works flawlessly
My framerates are @ 26 FPS at best, and often drop to 6 FPS (because of integrated graphics, and has no video card).
 
As I said, my computer meets all of the requirements, but I am thinking it might be the graphics card. I am upgrading both anyways. And, it freezes up on things like ES44s, and even if I have enough of the default content. On routes, depending on size an poly level, I can put about two 3rd party locos on the track before it lags, about 1 frame per minute, or even 0 frames in about 10 min. My computer has even blue screened from it.

No your computer is not lagging. Please for the love of god stop using the term "lag" wrong.

Latency is one of the most fundamental issues with communication between devices. It is the transmission delay between sending and receiving of information. The higher the latency, the longer it takes to receive feedback.

Participants in modern internet-controlled, heavily graphics-orientated virtual worlds often confuse fps and lag. When an area cluttered with graphics, and a complex drawing area slows down, all too often people say that the area is laggy, or their Internet connection is not sufficient to handle it. This is patiently untrue, and continued perpetuation of this idea leads people to invest in hardware they don't need, which has no effect on the problem.
A slowdown or sluggishness is to be expected. Data has a long way to travel, in large quantities, so some penalty must be paid. However, is all unresponsiveness in virtual environments really caused by lag?
The majority of lag in social VR worlds occurs via the Internet connection. The Internet architecture was never really designed for real-time interaction, and packets frequently cross thousands or tens of thousands of miles to reach a central server, and come back again - transmission time is always a function of double the distance to server.
It takes time to collect all the data necessary to construct a visual area from the main server - object placement, script commands, sometimes actual object and texture data itself. However, once this is downloaded, it is downloaded. That is to say, once it is on the local computer, it is not going to use the Internet connection again. The job of that equipment is done, and no matter how choppy the experience may be, its no longer anything to do with transmission times.
The task now falls to the graphics hardware. In particular, the graphics accelerator card, if present. If a dedicated graphics card is not present, that's the source of the 'lag' right there. Modern graphical virtual worlds demand dedicated graphical processing power. The graphics hardware has to analyse the data stored in the computer's memory, work out where in the scene each item is - what is occluded behind nearer objects and so does not need to be drawn, what is only partially occluded, and what is fully visible. In more advanced environments, it has to work out shadows, lighting, reflections, organic deforming surfaces, fog levels, or large numbers of complex avatars.
It has to do all this, anywhere from 30 to 80 times each second.
So, the next time you are in a high-density area, cluttered with complex graphics, and things start to slow down. Don't whine and bemoan your Internet connection. It has done its job, consider a better graphics card instead.

Rather then miss use "lag" why dont you use a more appropriate term. Such as "My computer slows down and my frame rate drops." OR "I get low FPS." OR "My FPS drops."

Unless of course, you are playing MP in Trainz, and things get iffy, then you can say its lag.
 
Point is.... The whole game is slow. I am not even using an internet connection, and even simple routes tend to cause my computer to freeze.
 
Lets just say my graphics card has isues. I have 3Gigs of space left and have already tried defragging and disk cleanup. As soon as I have 70 bucks I am going to replace the 40Gb hard drive with a 1Tb hard drive.
 
The issues are possibly a combination from multiple areas. Firstly, the X300 is an incredibly weak GPU. Even when it was new it was a low-end product. Aside from the lack of raw power, that 64MB of VRAM will be getting saturated very quickly, causing the slowdowns. Then there is the storage solution. The older HDD certainly won't be helping, however if you're going to replace it be aware that while a HDD isn't the be all and end all to video game performance it will help in Trainz due to the constant loading of assets as one moves around a route. With this in mind higher RPM drives or even SSDs are the most ideal in this regard.

The Pentium D and 1GB RAM are not ideal either, however for TRS2006 they will suffice.
