Looks like it's #1....

I think it says alot about the simulation genre when a mediocre train sim can win such an award - if we had the modern day equivalent of Longbow 2, Falcon 4 or Total Air War it wouldn't even have been a contender.

We do [1] [2] [3]. The problem is, the simulation genre has become so niche-ified that it doesn't even register on the 'mainstream' games industry anymore. So half-rate 'mags' like games-industry.com don't notice them. The fact that you're interested in simulations, but didn't know that there are GOOD modern sims similar to the old classics is a good enough indicator of what the mainstream press sees - they see nothing! </sergeant schultz>

Thanks for those links Nikkia. I was aware of Blackshark but thus far have declined to get it due to the Starforce copy protection. I had a bad experience with LOMAC (which wouldn't even install under Starforce) and I think it was Colin McRae Dirt I also had trouble with. I had to reformat the PC in the end to get rid of it.

I'll check out the other two (Warthog is blocked trying to look from work).

I bought RW2 back in Jan just to see whether my hardware could run it better than it does Trainz. The result was that is does run RW2 better, to a point.
The fact (as mentioned in this thread) that RW scenery is a bit on the pastel side, lacking detail helps FPS a lot, and also the draw distance is never so far in RW as it can be in TS2010. Most, if not all of the scenes included with RW have fog in them, so you can't see too far.

While I do enjoy the occasional drive in RW2, I have not, and do not plan to start any routes in RW. Just too frustrating. I love TS for it's simplicity and the relaxation I get from simply creating new routes.

I would consider upgrading to TS12, if there is a downloadable or at least a "no frills" version (compared to the $149 collectors edition) if, and only if I could first replace my whole computer system. It's 6yrs old, and doesn't run TS2010 all that well, so I don't see a point in upgrading the game without upgrading the hardware.

Vern - how did it feel grovelling?

Hi Vern --

Yes, I followed your thread with some interest.

How did it feel grovelling to the Moderators and others? Quite humiliating I suspect.

But then if you make anything but a glowing comment about RailWorks that is what you can expect. It makes me wonder, of course, how many other comments and posts are edited out to disappear into cyberspace.

Fundamentally I think it's a sign of immaturity - and deep down I suspect many RailWorks users are not all that happy with the core program, unsure if it will be improved, and dismayed at the impact on their finances of all the payware they are forced to purchase.

I'd also venture that more "robust" discussion and argument might make them all feel considerably better. But then again, the strict censorship might also be an indication of the state of the UK society. The Great British democracy might no longer be the land of the free and the eccentric. This might also explain the appeal of Jeremy Clarkson to the repressed masses - above all else he's the eccentric rebel who can thumb his nose at the rest.

Re UKTS... It was not one of my happiest moments... but lesson learned and it will be a while if ever before I naively start a similar thread on there. The site and forum does have its uses so I regard it as a tactical manouevre rather than an inglorious retreat. I know we get it with Trainz as well to some extent, but I really cannot believe how even the most fanatic RW supporter can resolutely defend the programme 100%. You have to wonder if they are playing the same software as the rest of us.

You also have to ponder whether some of the more frantic defensive posturing is because commercial interests are at stake. I got similarly shot down the other week after suggesting some recent freeware was of a far higher quality than payware, recieving a somewhat warped response this was an insult to freeware authors.

Go figure!

Ed, top banner, love it. lol.
Guys, if Auran ever advertised Trainz with just a small picture in the national presses, then people would know about it. I only found Trainz by pure accident on an old magazine CD from a friend while looking for something else back in 2002-3.
It seems at the moment it sells by word of mouth only. A national sales pitch would boost it way beyond any Railsim dreams (well in my opinion it would) and leave them all standing in dust.

True. The only ad for 2010 I saw was by random chance as I looked through a random "Trains (December 2010)" (not TRZ) mag and found it in a small tan box at the bottom of the page next to the spine near the back (p63 of 74). It was also listed by Topics Entertainment, not Auran or N3V. No description, no pics, nothing. Just min specs.

If you look at the review and the competition:

Railworks 2 Train Simulator
Landit Bandit
Food Network: Cook or Be Cooked
My Boyfriend

The review was awful. I can't believe the Railworks guys posted the link.

The Railworks followers were thrilled.

Cow Clicker could beat that competition.:Y:

Yes there is a game called Cow Clicker, you have to be on Facebook to play it (I'm not) but I did read why it was made. Hysterical!:D

It's true..Railworks 2 was voted the #1 train sim game out there. This should make the Trainzers happy. Let's see what 2012 brings to the table. Enjoy your Trainz or Railworks2 everyone.

It'll make the Anti-Trainzers happy.

I hope 2012 is an improvement over the past Trainz versions and not just the same old thing. It would be great if Auran would put more realism and true cab interiors and sound effects into the game. This would go along way in making the game #1! and bring new Trainzers into this hobby and pastime. I'll buy 2012 of course.
