Long session terminates Trainz.

I've just about completed a 200+ mile layout (a rebuild of the Maglev route actually) and tried running a couple of trains and see how the signalling and AIs run. I have two portals North and South, each generating a train every 10 minutes, trains do not return. A third portal just west of the Clare Bay generates a train every 20 minutes. These work out to be around 420 trains generated in every 24 hours, with an average of 10-20 trains on the layout at any point of time. I tried twice leaving i running by itself, but whenever I checked back 5/6 hours later, the Trainz error dialog came up (the one when Trainz terminates unusually). Since I cannot be monitoring the session for prolonged periods of time (I have school and homework you know), I cannot pinpoint this reason. It's been running for 3 hours now, and resembles something like powerpoint presentations.

Does Trainz crash when there are too many trains? Are inactive rolling stock/consists counted? Does Trainz crash only when the processor is severely overloaded?

ps. I'm using 06 on a P4 at 2.75GHz with 1.5gigs of DDR ram and a 6600GT.

It may crash if the cache buffer is overloaded.

Hi,

I have had no problems running one of my layouts for over 3 hours, with something like 30 - 40 trains on the layout at any one time.

System specs are near the same as yours, P4 2.8GHz with 1GB RAM and a 6600GT (256MB).

The only time that I had a crash is when the monitors refresh rate and the refresh rate in Trainz options were set differently or the same, strange but true. If you have adjusted the refresh rate in Trainz options to match your monitors refresh rate then change it back to 'Auto' and see if that fixes the problem.

Try monitoring the temperatures.

I had persistent crahses when trying to re-process some video files - then it happend with a long session in trainz.

The processor temperature was reaching 60C+ and the graphics card 55C+.

After addressing the cooling (new CPU fan + new case with twin fans) the CPU reaches 34C (max) and the Graphics card 45C.

Some PCs will shut down automatically if the temperature is exceeded....

What's the local temperature ?

Very large layouts need a very large computer. You need to add all the work that the computer is doing up. Although you may only see a small part of the route the computer is running the entire route. Signals, levers, trains, traffic etc etc. so add all this together makes for a lot of computer calculations and its easy to overload it. Each new train needs a new set of calculations to run it. Large route less trains small route more trains.
