London gets "tube" tied...

Actually most parts of the "heart" of London are within an easy walking distance, but the majority of people who work there would not know now to get from A to B without the Tube or a Bus!

That said, it must have been a bit of a pain for those who normally commute in from the suburbs (2-20 Miles) by Tube to have to use their nearest mainline railway station (already overcrowded trains). London also has next to no viable parking (unless you are VERY wealthy) and a "Congestion Charge" road tax just to drive into the central area.

More one day strikes to come, so I hear.

Glad I'm retired!!!

On my grand tour of Europe I passed thru London when the Tube was closed; had to walk from St.P's Intl. to Paddington Sta. with my pack on my back.

A couple of miles down the Marylebone Road (five stops - about 15 mins - on the tube!). Did you check out the British Library, Euston Station, wander through the south end of Regents Park or try and find 221B Baker Street (of Sherlock Holmes fame) on the way? You would have also passed Marylebone Station (one time HQ of "British Rail").

I think your pack could have got a bit heavy by the end of that walk....

You could always have got the 205 Bus - journey time about 40 minutes :hehe:

Cheers......

At the beginning of my trip to Europe (this was at the end) I spent a couple weeks in London doing all the touristy stuff.

I did try to catch the bus but with the Tube closed the busses were over full; and having a pack on I don't think I could even get on (although as I walked I kept an eye out for one that had space). Cabs were also very hard to get.

Hope you enjoyed your time in London. Next time you come over check out the North Yorkshire Moors, the Yorkshire Dales and also the Lake District, you will be amazed how different the scenery is in places just a few (70 ish) miles apart.

Cheers
