This is just a wild guess, but I was taught in photography class that there should never be something "sticking out" behind the subject, so I'm guessing it's the light pole or whatever it is behind the locomotive.

Headlight is on in surveyor mode. There are no arrows above the locomotive in surveyor mode. Could it be that you are actually in quick drive mode, and the surveyor tabs did not go away?
 
I see the front coupler is equipped with both an old style black operating lever and a more modern white one.

is it the fact that the front pole doesn't go to the ground, or it looks like two roads were placed part way on each other?
