Wow, those must be some big trees to stop a train sliding down a hill from falling into the river.

Nah, not that big. The train just isn't that heavy. It's an articulated type built out of lighter materials. In fact, it's not so much a "train" as we're used to, but more a light rail vehicle. If you look at the pictures you can see that it's basically just a low floor tram.
