Anyway,
The Kentucky and Tennessee was originally formed in 2006 whilst on a vacation here when I became fascinated with the scenery and the need of fully connected rail service to this area.
Then I later became fascinated with the history of the Tennessee Central, and how it ended up.
So recently I started a layout called the Central Railroad of Tennessee, then changing it to the Kentucky and Tennessee.
This railroad runs from Hopkinsville Kentucky to Knoxville Tennessee all on former TC trackage. It splits off at Monterey to form the Oneida Subdivision running on recently laid N&E trackage and brand new KT trackage then over the old Oneida and Western Railroad from Jamestown to Oneida.
Between Monterey and Jamestown, the railroad splits again where the Monticello (Kentucky) Branch leaves the Oneida Subdivision.

As usuall I just had to write a story and name a president.
Sabastian Scott from my "The Sims 2" was named president with a board of Directors consisting of Harold Campbell, Dorian Kauker, Ray McClellan, Dr. Kennedy Cox, Sandy Bruty and Keith Huckstep.
This group oversees operation of the system.

In this thread I will continue the story of the KT revealing some secrets about it and some facts about the inspirational prototype.
I will also include some Google Earth spots where you acn view the real thing.

So climb aboard as we discover the endless posibilties of a rail line through the Cumberland Mountains.

The Monterey Area.

Please log onto Google Earth and search for 13006 Woodcliff Rd and use your walking figure located at the top left hand side to view the railroad crossing. This will help visualize the area around here.
Here is a shot near Mineral Street in Monterey, please note this is unfinished.

Monterey Approach.

Please now search 178 Woodcliff Rd and view eastward, this is coming into Monterey from Cookeville.
Now look for 102 West Depot Street Monterey Tennessee
Now 328 E Commercial Street Monterey Tennessee This is on the Oneida Sub.
And 474 E Peter Ave Monterey Tennessee this is on the Oneida Sub.
Thats all for now.

And so Shall the tour continue!

Thanks NS!
Good to see someone post here.
Now type in 19384 Knoxville Rd Turn towards the north and you can see one of the towering bridges that are a hallmark of the eastern section of the railroad.
This is a long ways away from Monterey as this is east of Ozone on US70 which is about 5 miles south of Interstate 40 which is climbing the mountain north of the bridge.
Now type in Mt. Roosevelt State Forest Rd.
Look up and down this road stopping where you like along it. At the end there will be a firetower and several cell phone towers, this mountain is around 3,500 feet. The railroad tunnels under this mountain.
And do make sure you get the southeast view off the mountain at the firetower! You can see for miles up there, that is Watts Bar Lake out in the distance.
Unfortantly, vandals recently hit the cell phone towers and firetwoer with graffiti.
Clean up is underway I believe.
Also look for 570 Furnace Ave. Rockwood Tn.

1. The Establishment of the Tennessee Central Railway Company.
The Tennessee Central Railway was founded in 1884 as the Nashville and Knoxville Railroad by Alexander S. Crawford. It was an attempt to open up a rail route from the coal and minerals of East Tennessee to the markets of the midstate, a service which many businessmen felt was not being adequately provided by the existing railroad companies. They also wanted to ship coal and iron ore to the Northeastern US over the Cincinnati Southern Railroad, which was leased to the Southern and operated as the Cincinnati, New Orleans and Texas Pacific Railway [CNOTP], through their Cincinnati gateway. The N&K was only completed between Lebanon, where it connected to a Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway branch from Nashville, and Standing Stone (now Monterey).

Look for more in following posts as we continue to dig into the TC's (or KT) history.

Cheers,
Woody

Its in TRS2006 however it will be transfered to TS2009 when funds permit.
If you guys still have your Google Earth open, look up 1108 Swan Pond Rd. Harriman Tn. This is KT's biggest industry.

I guess you're not familiar with the real Kentucky and Tennessee. It was a coal hauling shortline out of Stearns, Kentucky, and ran to Oz, Kentucky. It interchanged in Stearns with Southern's CNO&TP. This was actually the railroad the saved the 4501. Southern sold the 4501 to the K&T and they relettered her K&T 12. TVRM, here in Chattanooga, who owns the 4501, also owns K&T 10 (which we numbered 6910 because it was similar to Southern's Ms-3's). The K&T also had one more Mike #11. You can still ride on the K&T today, it's known now as the Big South Fork Scenic Railroad and goes from Stearns to the Blue Heron Mine.

I only saw one screenshot. :( What am I missing?

K&T 10 looks like an Ms-3??? What??? They look nothing alike. See for yourself:

This K&T project sounds very interesting! I can't wait to see more progress.

I uploaded Alco S2's painted for both K&T and BSFS. Perhaps I could add a 2-8-2...

Adam,
I am uploading at Photobucket right now.
I'll be sure to get some shots up for you and everybody else.
Currently I ask that everybody explore the google map and get a feel for the locale so I can get your thoughts on my progress.
The overall mileage should be around 1,500 when complete with yards, mainline, sidings and branchlines. Plus the Oneida Subdivision adds about 45 miles.
If anyone is familiar with the old Zenith mines, that is where these coal trains are going!
My friend once told me, 'There ain't never gonna be no trains around here, well I'm showing them that there could be one day!"

I think that someone at TVRM in the early days thought that. It was numbered right and was even painted up as Southern. I really see it now, they look nothing alike.

I'll be making 12 sometime in the future.

...A little more...

Here we see Train C/O.2 working a string of cars in Monterey on the Oneida Subdivision.
Texturing is not at all complete, but my system is do the base texture and add the details later.
I plan to take a ride down Woodcliff Road soon, so we will see shots from that area fairly soon.
The overall trackage in Monterey is about 75% done.
The locomotives will be reskinned in the future, however right now they will stay CSX.

2. The Long Hard Road Begins
Nevertheless, by the 1880s, railroads were becoming a mature industry and it was not easy for a new competitor to break in. The firm and its successor companies would struggle for decades with both financial woes and hostility from the more established lines. (It was unable to use Nashville's ornate new Union Station terminal for instance, as that was controlled by the rival Louisville and Nashville Railroad and its subsidiary Nashville, Chattanooga & St. Louis.) The Tennessee Central linked Knoxville directly, by a link to the Southern Railway's subsidiary Harriman and Northeastern from Harriman to Knoxville, with Nashville via a route which ascended the Cumberland Plateau Escarpment at Walden's Ridge between Emory Gap and Crossville. The traditional major route for this passage had been made via Chattanooga.

Look for more in upcoming posts.
