Joining Forces for a PRR DEM from Philadelhia to Pittsburgh

As one DEM from Phila to Pittsburgh would be pushing the envelope of Trainz.

Deadpoolmx55 has a gigantic Pittsburgh DEM ... and a DEM is needed to merge Pittsburgh to Johnstown.

Several of us are doing separate versions of a Fishlipsatwork DEM from Johnstown to Altoona, (whether they will be payware routes are unknown to me).

I have a DEM from Johnstown to Mount Union, a WIP, as well as East Broad Top RR DEM.

We need a DEM from Mount Union to Marysvile, as there already is a DEM on Checkrail from Cove (Marysville) to Reading, which includes Enola yard (mislabeled Haggerstown).

Then all we would need is a DEM from Reading/Lancaster to Phila, which someone is working on.

On MSTS there are some routes that take 19 hours to complete a run from NY to Fla ... something like this would be wonderful in Trainz.

I propose that there be several separate DEM routes:

Phila to Harrisburg
Harrisburg to Mount Union (or Huntingdon)
Mount Union To Johnstown
Johnstown to Pittsburgh

I am open to all suggestions ... but if we all join forces to create a 4 section, huge iPortal route, from Phila to Pittsbugh would become a reality !

South Phila Greenwich, Enola, Pitcairn, Conway classinfication yards would be included.

Joining forces in separate mergable trainz routes would be a fantastic new idea for Trainz (of course those thinking of charging for a payware route, would throw a monkey wrench in the works).

I like the idea..... I've got my Mon Line DEM from Elrama (just south of Elizabeth) down to Brownsville and out to Bailey Mine in Waynesburg in Greene County. Not sure what we could do about Pittsburgh. With Justin as part of JR now, I don't imagine he or his DEM would be available for independent projects.

Shuddering at the thought of building Conway....

Cascade, pardon me if I've got this wrong. I seem to have this vague recollection from a long time ago, you made this fantastic NYC route along the Hudson River for TRS2006, the likes of which rival routes that Deadpool is building now. Is it still alive?

As a kind DEM maker made 4 DEM's for me, I merged them together ... all the work I put into it ... even if my DEM was payware quality ... I really couldn't charge money for it ... as the DEM creator would require a partial re-payment for his services, and a % of the profits ... as would a Fishlipsatwork if his DEM was sold for profit ... it just wouldn't seem right to make money off of someone elses hard work.

And too, if I sold my work, and his DEM ... only a handfull of Trainzers could enjoy it ... some Trainzers having no funds for payware.

Also if I released my route, I would put money on it that someone would make radical changes to my DEM ... and resell it for their own profit.

I think a Phila to Conway set of 4 route(s) should be available as freeware.

What do you think about this ?

Where you can assemble a train in Phila Greenwich ... drive it to Harrisburg or Enola ... then start a new iPortal session Harrisburg/Enola to Huntingdon ... and a new iPortal session from Huntingdon to Johnstown ... and another iPortal from Johnstown to Conway

So the whole idea is dead in the water because of greed ... so as to make monitary profit from other Trainzers ... as repayment for your hard work ?

Something just doesn't seem right about this "Profit from selling a route" idea !

When is Fishlipsatwork gonna get his cut of the % of profits made from the sale of his DEM ?

Oh right ... He released it as Freeware to all, and because someone makes radical changes to his DEM, it is no longer Fishlipsatwork DEM, and he has no rights to a % of the profits ... and now the Fishlipsatwork DEM is now claimed as someone elses hard work, to be sold for profit.

I'm beginning to see the grande scheme of things now !

I realize that your DEM was made by a friend, not Fishlipsatwork ... but still ... Greed !

America idea's ... I wanna get paid !

at the beginning of this thread you said several were using a 'fishlipsatwork' DEM, but didnt know if it was for payware routes. now you say that he should be asking for his % from payware routes. what has changed your mind?

who said anything about making money from a route in this thread except you?

did i say i was going to make it payware? no i didn't, I just don't want to give it out, plus i no longer have the blank dem.

My DEM is not by Fishlipsatwork ... and maybe I have a lifetime goal to create something fabulous, and give something in my lifetime, that someone else can use.

This thread makes no sense whatsoever. All I heard was something about PRR routes. The rest seems to be dribble

Yep, the usual $$$ vs. free.

My current applause goes to Checkrail for excellent routes that are much more than the usual track with some illogically placed assets. Unless a route is to the same level as Checkrail projects I see no reason to have it.

I am very interested in PRR stuff. A route made up of relevant/interesting sections would be great. But, it would need the detail of a Checkrail product.

I'm sorry but 19 hours?! I could nearly fly to Philly in that time... Times like these i thank the world for girls being made haha. I'm sure when i get to PA in October ill be inspired but not that inspired!

while we're at it lets build every railroad to full scale in the u.s.a. and link them all through i portal!

MSTS2 was to have every (major) rail line in the world ... but we all know MSTS2 went, into the cylindrical filing cabinet.

NY - DC, Phila - Conway is possible, though it would be heavy on graphics and PC memory.

I am willing to merge my DEM (Mount Union to Johnstown), with other DEM makers, who create Conway to Johnstown, Mount Union to Harrisburg, Harrisburg to Phila, (the Harrisburg to Reading DEM is on Checkrail).

Do you realize the scope of this project? I mean not just the Trainz Surveyor aspect of the route which would drag on for as long as it took to build the Pennsy main line in the first place. The individual files themselves are unbelievably huge now definitely need to be cut into tiny bits and merged together in Trainz. The NSGS has eliminated the small map option and only supplies 1 arc-second swaths of DEM data. The downloads themselves as zipfiles are close to 450 MB for some files. Even if you can load up the complete DEM in TransDEM, you still can't process it and have to go to the chopping block in there to just to be able to handle the data. This by the way is for the 1/3 arc-second resolution DEMs. 1/9 are even bigger.

Right now I'm planning and a northeastern PA route from Sayre to Allentown plus branches. This is the old Lehigh Valley and I've only downloaded two of the DEM sections I need to have a peek at the landscape. This in its self is going to be a long and difficult route to build once I get into the work on it.

Good luck on your project.

John

Well, you're right ... thats why we would need it in 6 to 12 iPortal segments:
NY - Phila
Phila - DC
Phila - Harrisburg
Harrisburg - Mount Union
Harrisburg - Williamsport
Williamsport - Rochester
Williamsport - Erie
Williamsport - Tyrone
Williamsport - Allentown
Allentown - Syracuse
Mount Union - Johnstown
Johnstown - Pitcairn
Pitcairn - Conway

I heard that some MSTS routes take @ 19 hours to complete a trip

Cascade are you still working on this? I have DEM data from ~Philly to just west of Pittsburg (Canton Ohio) in USGS chunks. Can't get anymore until US government stops being children as the USGS site is down. I am toying with doing Rockville to Gallitzin since the Middle division and the curve are my favorite parts.
