I've finally got a working running layout!

nice start! Your was better then my first set.
If you want to make that crossing work better get some model airplane servos and hook em up! I know those work as I had a crossing that ran with servos a long time ago but it was dismantled when we moved :(
 
my only layout is sitting out in my back yard.....being uh....weathered...and waiting for space

that and I am converting it from HO Scale to ON30 scale, so i have to strip everything off anyway

Well HO is On30 with the track but not anything else so keep the track and cut off a few ties.
 
Hi TBob,

you're off to a nice start. Nothing wrong with starting with a simple loop layout.

Suggestions:

Make a shelf in front to hold the powerpack so you can get it off the layout. A siding can let you try dropping and picking up cars.

There was a great book for beginners called "The HO Railroad That Grows", really excellent for someone starting out.
