Is there such a thing as "too many downloads"?

Is there a point where the amount of (e.g.) train cars you download will affect performance significantly?

My Local folder currently includes 282,519 files in 21,986 directories, taking up 25.2 GB. Did I overdo it? For that matter, did anybody out there see those numbers and say, "Is that all?"

It depends on how much your hard drive can hold. My local folder takes up 32 GB of space, and my local disk (c drive) has a capacity of 111 GB. Many of us, like myself, have much more than 25 GB of content. So basically if your hard drive holds about the same size as mine or more, then you should be fine for now.

Size is not an issue - I have my content on a 300GB drive that's only half full. I was just wondering if the amount of content would cause TRS to take forever to start each time.

Eventually when i tried to open, say, the rolling stock panel, or the scenery panel, it took so long that it got annoying. Also, finding stuff was like searching for a needle in a haystack and backing up my local folder took half a day. I had downloaded so much stuff that I will never use that I recently uninstalled and reinstalled TRS06 with a resolution that I would be more selective from now on.

Time and more time....

You have found the problem yourself.
Downloading a mass of content is not the real problem, the waiting time for tabs to change is.
For instance changing from splines to static objects takes ages and as you note, can be annoying, although I find it more frustrating than annoying.
I go through my statics every now and again and remove assets that are not or rarely used to save space.
It's odds on that I will find something or other during the course of time that I want to get off the DS so keeping my file size to a workable size is important.

My version of Trainz is TRS 2004.

As others have said it all depends on your hard drive. I have a 1 TB hard drive, so it would take a while before I could fill it up with trainz content. My old hard drive was a 320 GB, but that started to fill up especially with all of my other games, programs and what not.

Angela,

I have a very large number of downloaded assets (went a bit download crazy at one time) but I have no delay in changing tabs. That said, I'm running 2009 which has an assets "database" - I believe 2004 handles things a bit differently.

I'm wondering if your problems with speed could be improved by a few "tweaks" to the Windows OS. Even a simple thing like defragmenting the disc might help and there are a number of other more "technical" changes that could improve things. Just a thought.....

To the topic of the OP - I think you will find that you get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of assets you have to filter/sort through to find what you want long before load speed becomes an issue. Organising the assets into your own categories using CM2 is possible but takes time. It does not help when you get half a dozen assets from the DLS called something like "House 1" or "Factory 1", which is the description you see in the Surveyor tabs.

At last

To Shanks and Itareus,
Thank you both for your interests and suggestions.
At last I have found time to look at my drives and here are the results.

I have 14.2 Gb of assets in the Downloads folder. Goodness knows how many individual assets that actually is, I haven't the time to count them, but there are an awful lot.

I do Defrag my drive regularly, just checked and it does not need defragging right now, and I use EndItAll before I start Trainz up so there are a minimum of background programs running which should help the PC handle the graphics and tab exchanges better.
I think it may be the way 2004 handles the stored assets more than the PC so there is little more I can do about that.
I have tried tweaking but that usually upsets the apple cart rather than improving running speeds so I gave up on that idea.
My PC specs are high, as will be seen from the kind of routes I produce and can run on it so I don't think it's that end of things.

I live with a slow exchange, I am not in that much of a hurry anyway and right now I am suffering Trainz 'burn out' so am off making routes for a little while. I think we all suffer this effect now and then, but it passes, so I shall be back, rather like the Terminator!

Bless you both,

Angela

Well, I sympathise with ThatDonGuy, but, it does depend on how much you've downloaded to the waiting for your Trainz version to open, etc.....
At the moment I calculate at having about 300 GB of stuff on my HDD, nearly 375,000 assets downloaded, 14,500 sitting in my "open for edit" section....My dependencies with errors stood at over 6,500, but, having taken a week, I've got that down to about 750....I have nearly 300 routes with all dependencies, and I have to wait a wee while for everything to open every day.....I think that having lots of items open for edit and many assets with errors doesn't do the game any good, I would suggest to peeps that you try and clean up your CMP's for top notch efficiency....

Ohhh, and here's a question for you guys, which route available has the most downloadable assets, and a clue is - it 'aint on the DLS......:hehe:

Cheerz. ex-railwayman.
