I want to make the Adirondack Scenic Railroad from Tupper Lake to Lake Placid but i cant seem to get hog to work correctly. Would anybody be willing to make the map for me?

Funny you should start this post trainman177. I was going to request that someone help me make a route as well (getting DEM overlayed and terrain heights). I need DEM for the Great Lakes Central Railroad in Michigan. It runs from Ann Arbor (SE) to Traverse City and Petoskey (NW) of the lower peninsula of Michigan.

Link to map: http://www.glcrailroad.com (click on Track Map on menu to left)

Well that is if someone would like to do the DEM for me that'd be awesome! I'm not too good with figuring out the HOG using TIGER and all that. I also don't have TransDEM as my budget is a bit stretched atm.

Also, Is it possible to use data directly from Virtual Earth as the overlay for the layout? Sure would be nice to have for a guide to use for texturing.

Well thanks in advance to someone that might pick this up and send me the route.

Bob,

Thanks for the advice. I have checked out his work and see nothing for the GLC area sadly.

Thanks for posting though!

Still looking for some DEM help with GLC Railroad...

Basemaps

Basemaps (A-Z), & (0-9) are easy. 1km x 1km jpg images from satelite images like Google Earth and Topo map images are easily made by yourself, and used. If your area has no mountains, and just low rolling hills it might be easier to work with basemaps. If you need help with basemaps drop me a line.

Hello All,

Maybe some of you are aware of this article, and some not, but if you read this pdf, it will get you started with DEM conversions to trainz using freeware software. Where to get the Tiger stuff and assets I'm still puzzling about.

But hey, it's a start...;)

Greetings from rainy Amsterdam,

Jan

I came to ask the same question

Does anyone have experience making top maps in MSTS? I have done that and was wondering how the two systems compare.

I am looking for something around the Poughkeepsie NY area. I have done one in MSTS and wanted to try in Trainz.

Tnx for the links I will check those out and return.

Hi, Not sure why, I just tried again and it took me to the correct page. This is to the Home page for the site;

http://gaurc.us/index.htm

Go to Downloads and then to Routes, hopefully this will work.

Thanks again for posting. I had the same issue, but typed it in directly and it worked, so *shrug*. But thanks for posting. I checked out what you suggested. There's no Michigan DEMs listed. Thanks anyways.

Ok, after d/l PhotoShop free Edition, Using the above .pdf instructions and d/l HOG, and d/l MidcroDEM and following the instructions verbatim...I'm no closer to where I was before.

The problem I'm having seems to be w/ HOG. It won't convert my .tga I made of Cadillac, MI into a .gnd file.

I've searched forums for HOG and it comes up with nothing. I find it hard to believe that there's not a post about HOG on these forums. But I looked and not sure where else to put this...

Height Map: I used Pick to get the file that I named GLC Cadillac.tga
Data Format: Same used in MicroDEM; Chroma Depth Colors
Base Height: (Data from MicroDEM info) 361 481
Output File: Chose the same directory to put in GLC.gnd

Here's the error I get:

Error: tile template file tile_blank.dat not found or failed to open.

Can anyone give some ideas as to why this is doing this?

I had almost the same problem in the first place. The only problem was that I couldn't get the .grd file to work. I would do everything it said and it would be successful but when I opened the map in the game, there was no ground and everything was black.
