is there a reason to upgrade to 2010?????

hi guys,

iam looking for some help. i played 2004 and then whent onto rail simulator then came back and got 2009. only got 2009 2 weeks ago then i has seen all the news and pics about 2010. is there any reson in changing to 2010 or is it just the same unless you have a top of the line pc? i have tried to find some pictures on the web sites and on here and all i can find is US and europe rolling stock and routes. could not find a list of uk trains in the game.

i know you guys are very busy building trains and routes but if you could spare a min to post some UK route and rolling stock pictures to show the dif in looks and game play if any that would be a great help.

If I was you I'd stick with 2009 for now. I have found that almost all of my older content wouldn't work with ts 2010.
 
Content compatibility between 2010 and 2009 seems to be about the same for me. 2010 adds layers in surveyor and many additional high-quality assets and routes built in. In addition, the alpha blending is much better in native mode in 2010 than in 2009.

I would also like to know a couple of things about 2010.
How do the frame rates compare with 2009?
Has the sound been sorted for a steam engine running backwards?

Not a lot of reason to upgrade, unless you want the BEST RELEASE since TRAINZ itself.
I have been HEAVILY involved with TRAINZ since BEFORE its first release in 2001 and, in my opinion, TS2010 IS THE BEST TRAINZ EVER.

Sure its not perfect but its certainly getting a lot better. Speedtrees are amazing. the layer control outstanding, and the inclusion of more of the high-detail locomotives plus 9 new, well-built, Speedtree-populated layouts is a winner.

For about the price of a dinner out you get an outstanding upgrade.....

I carried out a number of frame-rate comparisons between TS2009 and TS2010. The tests where on the same areas of the Murchison2 layout using the same TRAINZ settings in both programs
The average frame-rate increase was almost 40% faster frame-rates in TS2010.

Also the pre-ts2009 trees, fences and telephone poles don't have the texture-dissappearing problem they had in TS2009 when running in Native mode.

Has the sound been sorted for a steam engine running backwards?

I haven't noticed a problem with older content working in TS2010, provided I am in Compatability mode.

I've found frame rates in Trainz 2010 a bit jarry at times, but I put this down to my graphics card, I have a Nvidia Geforce 7300, However I am in the process of upgrading to a Nvidia Geforce GTS250, this should solve my problem.

The point I'm making is, if you have a decent computer with a good graphics card, then I would suggest you upgrade to Trainz 2010, it has a superb UK route called the East Coast Mainline, it's set in the 80's, and your test is to drive the HST 125 from York, calling at various stations along the way, including Doncaster, right the way through to Kings Cross London.

There are also other superb and very well detailed routes from various parts of the world, there is more content and better looking content, except for the HST coaches.

Speedtree is a new item in Trainz, some people like them, some don't, if you don't like them there are other free sites to get trees from including Greenier and Jankvis trees, Some of Jankvis trees are included in Trainz 2010 under the name JVC, these are superb alternatives to speedtree.

As for the steam issue, I can't help you with that as I'm a diesel / Electric locomotive fan (Unless it's GWR Steam :udrool:castles:udrool:GWR:udrool:city of truro:udrool::udrool::mop: sorry about the drool, this is the main reason I don't talk about GWR on here)

I bought 2010 for the speedtrees. Sure I could have bought the seperate pack to add to 2009, but I wanted to support the folk who made this great sim.
The graphics seem better in 2010 (even though I was very happy with 2009's) and so far seems very stable and doesn't seem to take too long to load even tho I pile stuff into my routes. I have my settings set to Normal for textures etc, but the trains I have at High detail :D . Resolution is 1900x1200 and in GL mode. I haven't had any problems with the content manager.
I'm no great route maker but when the trains are running and the walking/trotting horses and carts are doing their thing along with the speedtrees my ficticious routes' "world" has "come to life"...very cool.
A lot of my older content seems compatible, but the ones that aren't I replace with newer content of same or similar nature as I have not a clue how to fix em..but it is not a biggy. There seems to be a lot more content and heaps of routes/sessions that come with the game. :udrool: I normally use compatibility mode except when I'm having a look at the routes/session that came with the game and then it is "native" mode.

There is some really great UK content available and I suspect that with the new layers feature a number of layout creators will be moving that way.

Speedtrees and technically the code is cleaner.

While 2009 content is fairly compatible with 2010... 2006 and below is not. Most content was and still is created for 2004 which creates a major headache for 2010 as you will most likely spend more time trying to correct errors in assets rather than working on a route (depending on how much you download from the DLS.)

While I agree that we should support Auran by purchasing the new version I understand that in many locations world wide money is tight. If I were you, and money is in question, I would wait a few months for Auran to get their s**t together and release an SP for 2010 and for content creators to start creating for 2010.

Sorry Auran, but I honestly wish I had not purchased 2010 even though I think it was a good step in the right direction it was not ready for release. The reason I regret my purchase? Well, I don't have the cash flow I had a year ago. I had to take a major pay cut due to our economic situation. I was willing to spend the $50+ because I thought 2010 would be worth it. Sadly, it to me seems like a service pack to 2010 that strips away compatibility with lower versions without adding any really benefit as most people will not be able to run it in native mode.

Most scenery objects only need a 2.4 version on them and should work fine in TS2010. Even new content created with TS2010 today most scenery objects still only need 2.4 on them.

I'd add my vote for 2010 over 2009 as well.

The frame rate is smoother than 2009, there's no "missing textures" and I've imported 2004 routes which are quite OK.

Obviously (?) the surveyor for 2010 is better (layers & 5 m grid) - there are niggles but overall it's a better release than 2010.

If you've only had 2009 for a few weeks, than I'd suggest waiting a bit until you'e familiar with 2009 (service pack is planned), then re-consider.

Oh - and I don't have a top of the range PC:-

AMD Athlon X2 4200 (dual core 2100)
AGP nVidai 6600 GT Graphics
2Gb Ram
Win Xp Sp3

Another question about sound in 2010

To expand on the question about improved sound in 2010:

A major (to me) problem with 2006 was that a whistle sounded anywhere on the route could be heard virtually anywhere else on the route (even dozens of boards away). This meant that if I had a lot of whistle boards set up, no matter where I was I heard an almost constant cacaphony of diesel horns, even when no train was in the vicinity. I wound up removing all whistle boards as a result, which I sorely miss. Has this been improved at all in 2010?

Not sure that I would even call that a problem. From my house, I can hear the Union Pacific and Amtrak trains whistle as they approach Brooklyn Yard, and we live more than 5 miles from the yard. In Trainz, that would be a dozen boards seperating us, and I'm sure that our house is not the farthest from the yard that can hear them engines blow their horns.
 
Well, on one of my routes I can hear trains in Akron, Ohio while sitting trackside in Youngstown, which is quite a bit more than 5 miles (probably more like 45 or so)...

Well for starters, those of us who bought 009 and 010 will more than likely be shifting route construction to the newer version simply as a result of the increased stability and extra resources from the new routes and rolling stock.

In fact, I'm currently drafting a short review of TS2010 for my site and it really hit me... When you benchmark what TS2010 has to offer compared to all the other sims and more particularly Railworks it is absolutely essential the programme survives. I was initially critical and sceptical of TS2010 but what other train sim offers so much out the box? I'm not talking so much about the individual routes but the vast resources of just about everything a route builder could ever need. That's before looking at the DLS, there's such a wealth of default content - just consider the amount of terrain textures in TS2010 versus the mediocre collection in Railworks. The rolling stock list seems to have grown again with more from the UK, Germany, North America and of course the superb Chinese stuff.

Whatever happens next in the train sim scene, including Auran's own aspirations, this unique collection must be preserved for all to enjoy in years to come.
