Is payware "selfish?"

I was chatting with one of my non-trainzer friends and he asked me, "how can you pay for payware when people make stuff for free? It seems selfish of the person selling it since there is a lot of good-looking freeware out there!"

My position on this is this: If the payware is prototypical down to the rivits and sounds, I'm gonna buy it because that person deserves the money for their hard work.

I want to know YOUR position on this question: Is payware selfish?

Not as much selfish as pointless.

...but I can't complain because if I could, I would be making payware. I'm very much a poor person.

Absolutely not, you mentioned your friend said "how can you pay for payware when people make stuff for free?" well there is quite a bit but it is not ALL of it is good looking nor is it ALL even useful...

I find there is NO crappy payware (maybe I am just lucky) but everything I have bought has been miles above any free content, no offense to dls creators but it is just a fact...
 
It's probably considered so by some, but I'm not sure when it became selfish to expect a little something for hard work. It's takes some creators months to create a good locomotive, why should they be ridiculed for expecting a little something in return?

I would wonder if it's not selfish to expect high quality content for free.

Is my time not worth anything? If I had to pay for research materials, textures, or what have you to produce a model, am I not justified in trying to recoup some of the costs involved and maybe even have a little money in my pocket for my hard work?

If a company has to pay to manufacture a product and market it, are they not justified in selling that product to cover the costs of manufacturing, marketing, etc., and have a little money in their pocket for their hard work?

Please have your friend read this thread.

Well Mike it can take time and talent to make scenery items especially if you do night mode and animation. So not only locomotives although they do require the most talent i suppose...

But my take on it is if you have something people want and is worth the price to those people, why not sell it. Now that is gonna rankle most but if you don't want to learn to make it for yourself and invest in the software then it isn't or shouldn't be taboo to sell the stuff...

It was after that thread AND having someone email me and complain about the stainless steel texture I put on a BBQ grill in the background of a larger asset that I was giving away that made my mind up for me...

I wasn't trying to single out locos. I was just using it as an example. There are some awesome scenery items out there also and I certainly think that those creators sometimes get forgotten in the wars on payware vs freeware.

As one of the freeware creators, I have absolutely no problem with payware. No one is forced to buy it.

If the same object was available in both free and pay versions and they were identical in all aspects, then the market will quickly decide which one will be acquired more often.

In reality it is probably rare that the two will be completely equal. One will usually be clearly superior in quality. If it is the freeware one, great but if it is the payware version, then depending on how much is asked, it will be the most acquired one. Now it becomes a question of, what is the value of quality? Only the buyers can answer that with their wallets. And that is really what it comes down to.

I just checked the calendar, and it was about time for a thread like this to appear again! Well done mates, right on schedule!:hehe:
 
There is plenty of good freeware available so you don't have to buy it but if you want something that is only available as payware then at least it is available.

It does provide an income for some creators, though its harder to make money at it than you might think.

Perhaps the question should be is it reasonable to expect content creators should spend hard cash on books for research and software to create assets for Trainz that others use for free?

Personally I prefer the freeware side, often you get two, three or more people working on a project to solve problems etc which is much more difficult on the payware side. Scripts, for example, mainly copyrighted, see more sharing on the freeware side than on the payware side.

I don't think anyone has attacked you yet, but it's sure to come. Some people don't even read the first post of a thread, they just react to the title. Judging from your title, you are bound for some interesting remarks.

My remark above is a bit sarcastic, but not aimed at you, just the forums in general. Every once and awhile a thread starts (even with the best of intentions) concerning a touchy subject such as this one. It will, as the others have degenerate over time, and will end up with the big old padlock on it.

I don't think anyone is attacking you here and if they are, I agree, they didn't read your original post. You asked the question, so get ready for the opinions. Ed's right, it probably won't take long to degenerate into the closed thread vault, but this subject is a regular on the forums.
