If I see a thread and can help, I will try. I may not have the correct answer, but at least I tried.
I think everyone has the responsibility to help others who come here with questions. I try to answer every question I can, but will not answer questions right away if I have no idea of what the answer is. I generally wait awhile, and let it go if someone else answers. If I can add something to the answer for clarification, I will do so. Now, if no one answers the poor soul at all, I may just post "I don't know, good luck", not to pad my post count, but to reassure the OP that someone cares, and to bump the post so others may then see it and respond.
I never used to do that unitl I read enough complaints about "No one responds to my posts, even to just say I don't know!" In addition if there is no response, then the OP posts again asking for help, complaining that no one answers, and then they end up looking bad, like they are impatient or demanding when in reality, they are just frustrated and unsure.
I will occasionally post a suggestion to use Google or forum search, because many times the answers are there already. What better way to help than to help someone help themselves? I don't feel badly about this, there are classes in schools intended to teach students how to use the library, why not expect a person to exhaust their research options before posting here?
I also will post in threads announcing new content or achievements just because the reason people post here is to "show off" what they have accomplished, no matter how big or small. Often I see these threads drop away with no response, and I imagine how the OP must feel! A little praise is a great incentive, and the guy who makes a flower pot today may be making your favorite engine in six months.
Sometimes, I don't have the right answer, or I may even post wrong information, but that's okay....there's plenty of people ready to correct me and if the chance to tell me that I'm an idiot is enough to draw them out to answer the OP's question correctly, then I have still helped, and learned something in the process.
There are plenty of unsung heros here who are constantly helping people. I've seen folks download and dissect items to help someone else. I've seen members download and post research items for creators, and I've seen people try to duplicate errors to help others solve a problem.
You know who you are, and I admire you all for the lengths you wil go to trying to help.
