Is creating in native mode TRS2009 worth the effort?

After spending time and effort creating an item for TRS2009 native mode and finding that basic existing scripts for UK couplings and texture groups no longer work and there doesn't seem to be any replacements available plus many existing tags for region and era now come up with errors I'm looking for reassurance its worth the effort to mess around with native mode TRS2009.

Running TC3 level stuff under TRS2009 for the most part works its just the native mode side and probably the trees. Has any one got a good looking tree sorted out yet?

Thanks John:confused:

Well personnally John I like your stuff and think you do quality work. I would like to see your stuff at 2009 standards as I downloaded the vehicle you did and it was great. I would love to see your 86 foot box cars done to 2009 standards and would download them immediately. Hard part is doing 2 versions for the same item and keeping straight the different config systems.

I hope you do some stuff for 2009 and look forward to it. I think 2009 will be the Trainz of the future ( well for a while anyway. )

In what way don't the couplers and texture groups work in TS2009 native? They do here.

If it says 2.8 everything works native mode TRS2009, bung the version number up to 2.9 which I assume is required for normal mapping and it starts to fall apart.

The issue isn't doing stuff that works in TRS2009 native mode the issue is the amount of cosmetic work that has to be done to change the region, era etc. into trs2009 format. On one fine change it but I have hundreds of the buggers to change just because some one took the executive decision it would look nicer in a different format. I assume the same information oh and go and look it up in the wiki on trainzdev is required for the syntax. I have yet to locate anything in that wiki.

All 2.9 native mode seems to offer is normal mapping and maybe I'm not getting it correct at the moment but my beta testers can't tell the difference with or without normal mapping.

Possibly a wild thought but if you need to make the same clerical changes to a set of config.txt files could a program be written in a language of your choosing to do the job?

I've replied to your thread on TrainDev about this. Build 2.9 is not required for normal mapping, that will work in TRS2004. The change to the syntax for the category-region and era tags happened for TRS2006, i.e. 4 years ago - I agree it's a pain that TS2009 now enforces the new syntax and that you can't tell which assets have normal mapping.

Thanks I ran a test dropping the version number to 2.8 as mentioned on Trainzdev with the BR MDO whatever and it seems to have normal mapping working nicely. I'll try it with TC3 for the heck of it just to see what happens.

John Orley (Jontee) has been playing with Photoshop add ins and has come up with a normal map for one of the seven planks so I think it's time to double check the process etc but if we have it right it and it works in TC3 it means a lot more normal mapped vans and wagons can be made available without too much effort.

John been reading here and on Trainz Dev about this and it seems like you have it all sorted out. This conversation has also made me aware of how this all works. Good information to be aware of.

Yes but it begs the question why would you want to use version number 2.9?
