invalid spline

another time waste that I encounter frequently is losing the spline when the "Invalid Spline" error pops up. Is there a reason why we cant end up still holding the spline when that happens, rather than having to go back to the other end and start it again?
what exactly is an invalid spline?

I've been editing a route imported via TransDEM with some tracks attached to other splines. As I go about separating them, I also remove extra spline joints. That's when sometimes I get the invalid spline error popup and have a section of track disappear. Why? That track was showing just before and the route thought it was just fine. How does removing a spline joint suddenly make part of the track invalid? Delete Missing Assets will sometimes bring back part of the deleted track.

Invalid spline.

This is caused by attempting to attach two different kinds of splines together either inadvertently or intentionally. The really annoying thing is that the spline that's being dragged and you've inadvertently let go and placed a spline point on top of another spline such as grass, causes the spline you're dragging to go back to the previous spline point. This is really, really annoying when you're working with complex catenary or other things that have lots of splines.

In the old days, we would get a scary BUZZZ that was later reduced to a bleep-click by TS12. That should have been it but no, the developers thought posting a message and undoing our work was a better idea.

That would explain the mechanism but there must be more than one way to trigger it.

I have a series of track segments in a curve with multiple roads, sidewalks and other splines crossing them. The mess was created in TransDEM so that there are a bunch of splines joined that have no business being together. No error is declared by the game at this time. Then I separate the splines, joining the appropriate ones together. Now I want to simplify the curved track by removing intermediate splines and letting the track form its natural curve. Usually nothing bad happens but occasionally I get the Invalid Spline error and a one or more track sections disappear. By invoking the Delete Missing Assets function, some of the missing track will re-appear. I don't recall there being other splines still attached but since no error is declared as long as they are not disturbed, I don't know if they are there.

Kind of hard to duplicate since I can't setup the incompatible splines to test. Before separating them, a joined road and a track spline will move together as a unit. once separated, they stay apart and I cannot rejoin them.

I remember the first time I had a spline snatched away and that blasted message popping up when working in TS2019. My first thought was, 'What kind of idiot came up with this as a 'good' idea'. The message had a 'don't show this message again' tag on it, but clicking on it made no difference at all and it would be right back again like a curse. The stupid thing was taking a spline anywhere near another spline with no intention at all of trying to join them together would trigger the daft brain dead message as well. The only thing it achieved as far as I was concerned was to make route creation more awkward and difficult.
