Internet Explorer messed up.

Hello,
Before anyone say use firefox etc etc. I already use it. However for some things you need to use IE. For example windows updates, or when some programs need updating they must be done from IE for some ungodly reason....
No matter what I do IE will not show a page. It keeps saying "This page cannot be displayed yatta yatta yatta" I have uninstalled and reinstalled IE. Nothing. I have messed around with the settings in IE and guess what...nothing.

On a different note, I also noticed Google Earth stopped working as well because it relys on IE... I tried to reinstall that as well and the problem still occurs. "Google Earth cannot connect to the servers. Google Earth can still operate but will only use things already in the cache" I have tried to solve that issue through google, however they need IE to properly diagnose the issue >.<

Any help is very much appreciated.

Unfortunately, it has come to my attention that Internet Explorer 6 will end its life within the new few years. Try using a different browser (e.g. FireFox, Opera, Google Chrome or Safari)

I'm using Win7 with IE8 and have no problems. Perhaps your problem stems from using IE6 which is well past its use-by date. What OS are you using?

Internet Expolorer>Tools Menu>Internet Options>Advanced Tab>Reset

This would be the first thing I'd do, so you've probably already tried it.

I just checked the shortcut on my desktop and it says that it is using IE7? Even though I have IE8 installed... Or did microsoft make me download IE8 during my last windows updates just to find that XP can't even use IE8?

I checked the IE8 folder in C:/Windows/IE8 and everything appears to be the same as the IE7 folder with the exception of some new things obviously. I also scanned my computer with 5 different sorts of anti virus/malware scanners....nothing..so it is bittersweet there.

Edit: IE8 doesn't work period even though it says it works for XP....go figure.

Then it should theoretically be working...I reinstalled it again and nothing.

Have you tried running Internet Explorer with no Add-ons?

Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

Hi Gandalf,

A friend in work had a similar problem and it was solved opening 'Internet Properties' navigating to the 'Connections' tab and clicking on 'never dial a connection'. Hers had been fiddled with and IE was trying to connect via dial-up rather than her broadband connection.

I'm running the same O/S as yourself with SP3+IE8. No problems . I've checked and it's IE8 I'm using.
You've maybe done this but open firefox and type microsoft updates, then go to XP updates. It will say you have to use internet explorer but read on and you can use microsoft download centre on firefox. Have a go from there.

If you are running IE7 but have downloaded IE8, you may have IE7 trying to access IE8 functions accidently and that is not 100% compatible. One option would be to uninstall IE8 then run IE7 and see if the problem persists. If not, then the two were conflicting. If yes, then on to something else.

I've avoided IE8 because it ran slower for me on my Vista system especially opening new tabs, was said to be related to my Security Software that is not compatible with the new IE. That's another thing to check.

You should be able to uninstall IE8 through Control Panel

On the other hand have you tried clearing your DNS cache? Try Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > DNS Client and then 'Restart service' (or set to manual temporarily then Start)

I had a virus on my computer, that was one of those rogue anti viruses. I got rid of it in 3 minutes flat. Just deleted where the exe was running from and cleared the registry entry it had made.

You should be able to uninstall IE8 through Control Panel

If all else fails you might end up having to do a fresh install of XP.
Have you got a 40 gig partition spare? If so put it there with the rest of your system/hardware drivers. To get rid of any left over virus format the drive /partition it's on.

No I do not. It was a prebuilt computer so the HD is 1 full drive. Not to mention it is very old now and has a small amount of space compared to the drives of today(144gigs) But let me try these other things first.
