Installation problem

Trainz Back On Track
Hi

Can anybody help me? This is doing my head in. Yesterday I purchased an online copy of the 2010 Engineers' Edition, and downloaded 5493 MB of 5493 MB of data contained in 12 of 12 files into the bootstrap web installer ("Trainz10.exe"). So that is a completed download with no notified corruptions or errors. This then activated the 'Install' button in that window. The problem for me is that when I click 'Install', absolutely nothing happens. No error message, and the process disappears from Windows Task Manager completely. I run Windows 7 Home Edition 64-bit, with more than capable specs where memory and graphics are concerned. I have been through the Windows Troubleshooter process and have tried compatibility modes for all previous versions of Windows. The Troubleshooter conclusion is that the application is not valid for Windows 7, but the Microsoft Windows 7 Compatibility site says both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7 should run this program. No other Forum members seem to have this problem, they at least get to run the damn thing before they have to post problems to this Forum. Can anybody help? The online purchase was made through "Just Trains", and I have the activation code ready and waiting to go into the installed program! Thanks all.

Welcome to the forums. We'll see what we can do to help.

To me this sounds like something got hosed during the download, meaning the files are corrupt somewhere. Your best bet maybe to redownload the files again, but use a file download manager such as Free Download Manager. This application will recover your download should there be a glitch somewhere.

Now could you please post your complete system specifications? This will help us troubleshoot for you since we're not at your computer, and cannot see the screen. If you're trying to run the program from a laptop, this is essentially a no-go unless it's a big gaming machine. There are also other graphics issues to consider even with a desktop, so again please post this, and we'll see what we can do for you.

Re: installation problem

Well, unfortunately, I have already tried the re-download and it didn't help. Having carried out two downloads now of more than 5GB each time, and waited 4-7 hours on each occasion for them to complete, I am reluctant to burn any more bandwidth (or any more time) on this. I got the download link for a knockdown £15.30 from 'Just Trains', and am currently awaiting a reply from them as to what they think the problem mught be. I can supply the emailed download link I was given if you wish, though it is probably the same one as supplied to other customers of 'Just Trains' who purchased this. I will not post the link here now, in case it is against Forum rules. You must let me know if it is OK, or even of any use, to do that. I have to say that the behaviour of the bootstrap installer is very like that of other incompatible program installers I have tried. All appears well until the very point of installation, then the process disappears into the ether, and my computer doesn't even seem to notice that anything was supposed to have happened (witness the disappearance of the process from Task Manager and the lack of any error popup at all). I realise the consumer protection laws regarding money spent on software and its suitability for one's PC specs, so I may have to put this one down to experience. A shame, because as an ex-British Railwayman of the Seventies ('73 to '80), I was looking forward to getting stuck into this little adventure. However, if any of your Forum members can nail this problem, I would be eternally grateful, as you will guess. Best wishes to all.

Can I check something?

Do you have a Yes/No box appearing (titled 'User Account Control') when launching the bootstrap installer?

Hi Shane

I did get this, but I have long since switched to 'Run As Administrator', if that's what you are getting at. All appears to be in order at my end regarding permission to initiate the install - otherwise I would then get a 'You Do Not Have Permission' popup message - but I get absolutely nothing.

If it is something else you mean, please ignore this! I am keen to get this sorted.

Thanks for your continued help.

Lee.

OK - that's one potential issue out the way.

I've only ever had boxed copies of Trainz, but I should still be able to advise on downloaded copies.

As already stated, the likely culprit is probably either the bootstrap installer (possibly corrupt) or one of the data files.

Did you have to enter your Just Trains account username and password somewhere in the process so far?

Shane

EDIT: My tutorial website contains instructions on how to verify that it is indeed running as administrator.

Right - here's the process so far.

Bought "Trainz Simulator 2010 (DOWNLOAD)" (advertised on the website as "Engineers' Edition", but not mentioned in emails) from 'Just Trains' website for bargain £15.30. No account required - one off card purchase through cart system.

Received two emails, one containing order receipt and confirmation details, the other containing instructions for download. In the second one, there is a clickable link, which I can give you if it is relevant, and an instruction to save the file to a suitable place. There is then given the "Unique Activation Code" (which I haven't even got near entering as yet!). And now the following instructions (copied and pasted here and my actions/results in red):
  1. Double-click on the file you have downloaded to start the downloading process. Done. Success.
  2. Click the 'Start Download' button to begin downloading the program main installer files to your computer. Done. Success. 5493MB of 5493MB in 12 of 12 files, all downloaded.
  3. When downloading has completed you will see the ‘Install’ button become active. Yes, it does. Success.
  4. Click the 'Install' button and follow the on-screen instructions. Done - but no instructions are then shown. Bootstrap installer window merely disappears, Task Manager shows no CPU time being used on any extra processes othere than are running as normal, plus "Trainz10.exe" is now not active in Task Manager processes.
  5. Type in your unique activation key when prompted and follow the on-screen instructions. Not yet possible.
  6. At the end of the process you will have a shortcut to the game on your desktop and you can run it from there. Alternatively, the game can also be started from the windows start menu in Programs (or All Programs). Not yet the case.
  7. You can uninstall and re-install the product on your PC as many times as you wish – there is no need to unlock or re-authenticate. Wouldn't yet know if that's true.
  8. To install the product on a new PC or if your PC is re-formatted, you need to unlock it again. Simply download the file again and follow steps 2. Wouldn't yet know if that's true.
  9. You can unlock your product as many times as you like. If you have any problems unlocking your software, please 'contact our Download Team'. I have sent details of my problem through to the Download Team via that link; unfortunately, they only work Mon. - Fri. 10am - 5pm. Too late for this week.
Hope this is what you were after knowing. By the way, having cast your eye over my machine specs, would you agree that it should be capable of at least installing the program, although it could subsequently prove be sluggish in operation?

Hey Shane

I just found where all the files are stored (C:\ProgramData\Just Trains). I think I can bypass the bootstrap. I have experimented by clicking on the file "setup1.exe", and this has initiated what appears to be an install. The window I have now in front of me says "Select Setup Language" in title bar, and "Select the language to use during the installation" plus a dropdown choice menu defaulting on "English", with "OK" and "Cancel" buttons. Do you think I should proceed further?

Lee.

Seems correct so far, apart from the process disappearing problem.

What it may be worth checking in Task Manager is in the Description column (processes tab) for any references to Trainz or it's installer.

The specs appear fine for installing, although you may encounter sluggishness during playing.

Another thought though - was your antivirus turned on during the download?

Shane

It was, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't affect anything. I chose ClamWin because of prior recommendations from various sources and people, and it's proved to be an effective but non-invasive application. Did you see my post about the possible bootstrap workaround?

Aha! I have reached the "Select Components" part of the install, and it tells me that the greyed-out and already ticked "Trainz Core Environment" component (so, compulsory) will require 322.9MB (no problem there).

Unfortunately, it then says that the "Engineers' Edition content set" will require 7,398.2MB - a total of 7,721.7MB!

I haven't got that much space available, have I?

I do wish vendors would make it clear how much "eventual hard drive space" will be required, I really do. This is most annoying. The bootstrap process has obviously calculated the amount of storage space available, and said "Whoops, no!" without telling me, and abandoned the installation (like I say, without telling me why).

That's probably a dead-end for me, folks, as I won't be expanding my memory/HD space anytime soon. Any further thoughts would be welcome.

Lee.

Might be worth checking how much free space you have, as all components must be installed to avoid issues later on (usually related to missing items, or serial number issues)

I am talking utter rubbish here. That's 7.54GB out of an available space of 348GB. So I have gone ahead with the install, and that is progressing well, it seems. It seems...

This must have been a faulty bootstrap issue, as the workaround seems fine.

Once the install is done, you will need to do a few things.

Firstly, register your serial number (click Serial Number above to access the required page for this)

You will also need to enter your keycode when prompted (this may need to be entered into a seperate window)

Once all that is done, post your 5-digit build number shown on the Launcher screen - I can then advise you on patching the game.

Hi Shane

Successfully installed, and start menu opened - eight options, Start, Options, Content, Manual, Website, Extras, Forum, Quit (Build 42203).

A diagnostic process has run, showing green ticks ("Passed") for everything except "Video Driver's Age - 15 months old - Update".

Am about to look on nVidia's website for the update.

Thanks.

What Serial Number? You don't get one with a download do you? Perhaps you do with a boxset, but I've not been given one. Just the Activation Code. Ah, I see. The Activation code is the Serial Number - six sets of four figures separated by "-" - that fits.

From what I understand, Just Trains have a seperate application that is installed with Trainz (or any of their other downloaded products) which may be able to convert the activation code into a serial number.

If it begins ATS, or ATR, then it may be the actual serial number already.

Shane

EDIT: I've got to go offline now - someone else may respond to your thread before I am back online in about 10-12 hours.
