In-forum advertising?

Personally I myself will have nothing to do with anything connected with MSN, and any software that wants to put a google bar in my browser.

I find them too intrusive.

Also the link from Ahsan shows:
Basically Google looks at the keywords on a website and displays ads appropriate to the site.

If so, why did the add when I logged on tonight show a norwegian genealogy add?

Where in the Trainz forum or website would it find genealogy?

Maybe Google are going beyond the agreed "keyword" section of the site code, and are also scanning the text of the forum posts.
That would be dangerous, but more appealing to their advertisers.

Hmmm, let's test this theory:

Horny Rhinos

Now, if anyone sees an ad relating to the above in the next few days, please mention it in this thread. :hehe:

Smiley.

This just appeared today:

"Blocked by T/Micro"
T/Micro security has id"
(that's all I can make out, as the bottom half of words are cut off.)

EDIT: That was until a few moments ago, when these adverts re-appeared.

Someone asked (probably a younger member) why these adverts are now in this forum?
ANSWER: Simple really. It's just that Auran wants more money.

It's the same reason as to why the first class tickets was introduced (even though the boxes of several versions state free unlimited downloads), the same reason as it seems as you need to pay for each route in Trainz Classics (if I've read that right). Just the same as banks now charge you to get your own money out if you go over a certain about of withdrawals, the same as to why VirginBlue will now charge its passengers for ALL luggage they carry on, or check-in luggage on to their planes.

I have one question... Does Auran get money just for posting the ads, or do they only get paid when someone clicks on them?

I hope to have a better experience with Google ad sense than I had and thousands of others have had.

I know as a webmaster I had to agree to Google's terms of service which basically said that they could cancel my account without any warning and without me being able to inquire as to why.

On my site when it launched I got about a thousand hits the first month, then it doubled and almost tripled the following months, I get really close to having that $100 that Google requires before you start to get paid, and they canceled my account stating that I had violated the terms of service but no they could not tell me why.

I found out after that that they have done that to hundreds of thousands of websites. It seems to be a natural thing. So I sincerely do wish auran more luck than I had.

Just my two cents

What really frosts my bum

is when the keywords are buried in the text of the post. For some reason that grinds my gears.

I've grown used to the ads by now, but now that I really pay attention, most of the ads I see are irrelevant. An advertisement for a television show? Free form filler? Also, I've started noticing some popups with the forums...are they, too, associated with the Google Adsense program?

Tim

You missed the point. I am running an anti adware/spyware program. The popups didn't occur yesterday or today, but they only started happening every once in a while since Auran started the Google AdSense program.

I didn't miss the point. Nobody else reported pop-ups after the ads were implemented in the Trainz Classics banner but you. Somehow your end of the line allows pop-ups ;)

Goodle AdSense doesn't use pop ups to the best of my knowledge and in my experience of using them.

Plus, if it helps, I have seen none and there have been no other reports of them. This may suggest the problem is somewhere else along the lines, maybe at your end or another site you have visited.

I disagree Zwab, my pop up blocker reported nothing so I suggest that is not the issue at all.

Andy

PS can I ask what the pop ups were about? May help to confirm whether they are definitely nothing to do with AdSense.

Funny, I though my post constituted a series of suggestions to that end already...

Andy

PS Zwab, you're really shaping up to be mod material, well done :o

I'm not sure...I never give them a chance to load. One time I had walked away from the computer, and the popup was there, but it was still waiting for a reply.

I would agree with you, Andy, based on many of his replies. And his occupation, "making Tony Hilliam's life miserable." Seems rather immature, doesn't it? Just my take on things.

An ad (& it's ad, not add! - runs & hides :hehe: ) for "Admin Password" etc.

Gee, wouldn't I like to get their passwords, and put bring back the posts that are deleted from public view that I think didn't need deleted. :hehe: - Hmm, think I should run & hide again!

Wow Tim ... you sure now how to butter up the person who tries to help you.

Correct, do you see any other mod sharing a helping hand?

No but then they are moderators not tech support.

Someone makes a negative comment about you so they couldn't possibly be offering their own opinion of you could they? No they have to have some cause for bias. Your general attitude couldn't possibly be the reason why people react negatively to you...:o
