I'm just curious...

Okay...I've had it with these "I'm just curious" posts and PM's. They, more often than not, are followed by some selfish request or lame comment. The most recent one I've received was "I'm just curious...do you still have the DEM for your Hudson route?" Well...you may be curious...but you can't be serious. That's like saying..."I'm just curious...but do you have the mesh for that loco you made?"...or "I'm just curious...can you give me your wife's cell phone number?" Ha Ha Ha...fat chance! :D

Cheers,
Fred

Yeah people asking questions, how rude

It's not about asking questions. It's about the manner in which they're asked. It's, also, about the intent of the question. Is it an intelligent question, relating to Trainz or railroading...or is it a question from someone who expects to get what they want with minimal effort on their part? By the way...you might want to run a spell check on "Amature". Geez...

Cheers,
Fred

Humans spell things wrong?! And make mistakes? This is madness!!, you have to remember, not everyone was raised the same way and has the same morals, and when it comes to human behavior it can be anything on a large spectrum and how a Person Aproaches a subject like asking a question like, you wouldnt still have that dem, they are being nice and decent about the situation, and you making the person feel like crap creating a thread about the question they asked is a little uncalled for. Also not every person understands the rules and regulations of TRAINZ, after all the lie most told on this earth is i have read the rules and regulations and i accept, cut people some slack and don't be so up tight, im sure it killed your whole day to read a question in your message box that you didn't agree with, it must have, you made a thread about it.

...not everyone was raised the same way and has the same morals....

Ain't that the truth.

See I was raised that if you wanted something you just asked - straight out. If you got a 'Yes' that was good. If you got a 'No' then you accepted that and kept on going. Like Fred I get constantly 'asked' for stuff. I don't mind if it's just asked. Mostly folks who just ask accept a 'No' and thank me for the time in replying. No sarcasm, just 'OK, Thanks.'

Then there are the folks who sugar-coat the request, even sometimes manage to make it sound like by me giving them say a DEM for a route even I haven't built yet they are doing ME a favour. They get a 'No' too. And they carp and whine and call me names and even right up to death threats. Believe it.

I hear you Fred, loud and clear...

Andy

I'm just curious...

Why title a post with the same statement? :D

Regards.
CaptEngland

P.S. I can see what you mean, by the way, about asking for stuff. Still, sometimes one has to ask in order to get!

I just hate how some of you guys get so worked up over a game, it wasn't even me that asked for the dem. you'd think they asked him for some money, you know you take this game to seriously when you compare the game to your wife

But being a newbee, I have nothing! and you guys have everything! :'( NO you say? Ok that's .

Everyone's a newbie at some point and has to go through the growing pains. That's just part of life. I wasn't born with a car or a house or anything else. I had to work to acquire them. It's the same with trainz. Patience is the key, and a little work. I don't think Fred is saying that we're not willing to share because we are. The DLS is a testament to that. I've got over a thousand items on the DLS that I've shared and there are others that have much more than I. It's the perceived attitude that comes across when these 'help requests' are made. Sometimes they're not help request, but rather 'gimme requests'. I've got one member that used to threaten me because I wouldn't turn my payware into freeware.

That's the thing. And you will possibly never get it. To you it's a game. Just a game.

Firstly Trainz isn't a 'game' on any level. There is no scores, no winner, no loser. It's a sim. There's a difference.

And to most serious content creators and route-builders it's not even 'just a sim'. It's an all-consuming passion. You don't get routes like mine or Fred's or George's or Joe's from folks who think it's 'just a game'. You don't get trees like Trunda's or Pofig's or Jan's or Dave's from folks who think it's 'just a game'. You don't get locos like Justin's from folks who think it's 'just a game', or skins like Mick's or Mike's. You don't get hundreds of crossings to choose from because Clem thinks it's 'just a game'.

To all of those folks Trainz is somewhere between a very very serious hobby and an all-consuming passion, and I suspect for most of those I've mentioned - and there are hundreds of others - they are way up the 'passion' end of the scale and the stuff they produce takes pretty much every minute they can spare for it.

Then somebody comes along and slaps a cruddy skin on a loco or completely mangles a route or whatever and believes they have a RIGHT to upload it, distribute it, call it 'mine', use it as they wish because it's 'just a game' and 'not worth getting worked up about'.

Wrong. Dead wrong.

Go play your 'game'. I'll stick with my passion for the best sim on the market and I'll stick with the folks who have the passion to create some of the best freeware content available anywhere, for anything.

But my content is mine - not yours....

well, i guess ill have to look at it the same way i look at how i look at moto, I race motocross, to others i guess its just a sport, but to me its a thrill and a rush, and dare i say a natural high there's a lot of skill and fitness required, but to others it may just be guys riding a dirt bike on some jumps. the same would also apply to NASCAR i guess, but i don't mean to demean what most of you do, I was just confused as to why the recent out break of people complaining and accosting others for asking questions about content and for re-skinning without permission was a big deal, i guess my nature is to not stand by and watch, i feel i need to get involved.

Well in my previous reply I was just joking, I'm sure everyone knows that. But now I'll be honest. I totally understand what Fred is complaining about. He feels people are bugging him. If its a lot of people bugging him it can become very annoying. But just a few and maybe he should politely tell them to leave him alone.

Passion is the key word. No matter what activity or hobby a person is passionate about that person will be serious. And I have noticed that people perceive sharing their experience and knowledge differently. Some are open and willing and others guard all they have and only exchange if they receive something in return. For me it all depends on my mood, how the person talks to me & who they are, and what it is they want from me. I think most people are like me, it is just politics & business. And since the year 2xxx living our lives has become harder on this planet for people like myself. Nowadays We are more cautious and protective.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is I understand because I have passions also.
But I really do wish I could get help wwith the problems I have using Trainz. I admit I am a stupid when it comes to some technical things with Trains. I need help and I have asked as best I can on this forum. And I'm thankfull for the few reply's but they don't give me an answer, just a reply. or the answer is short and incomplete or off topic and confusing. At first they said no help until I registered my copy, ok, I registered my copy. Now why can I not get someone to give me a complete simple to understand hold my hand answer? Ever since I'v been here (forum) People assume because I am a "newbee" that I have no knowledge about anything. They say things like "Everyone's a newbie at some point and has to go through the growing pains." Really? you mean to tell me I have to start at the bottom and work at making me acceptable to the Trainz community? I have earn points and medals to have a respectable reputation? How long will that usally take? because at my age I may not live that long. I mean that's all fine and dandy but I NEED help now not later...FYI everyone is smart at what they know and stupid at what they don't know. Please don't treat me like a half-wit punk.

I may know some things ... but I certainly don't know it all, not even close.

The more, and more that I learn ... the more new facets I find ... that I find that I need to learn anew again, a whole brand new process.

So in essence I am still a newbie ... but I do have some (0.01%) operating/creating experience ... that I have chosen to freely offer all the help that I can, lending a hand to others ... newbie & veteran.

I learn hundreds of new things per day ! But I find that there are a million, billion, trillion, more things to learn !

You sound like a desent down to earth person. And with 6,578 post you got to know more than me about the Trainz program. Can I ask you a question?
In your above post, are you refering to Trainz or your life?
I enjoy helping people who ask for help. But I need them to say a serious thank you otherwise I feel they don't respect me, like they expect me to give help.

That was very well said and I can honestly say that there's not a word in your post that I can disagree with. Trainz may have started as a game to some, but as your said, games have winners and losers. Trainz is a simulation, and a very good one I might add, and as far as I'm concerned, everyone can be a winner if they apply themselves to the sim.
